Chapter 26 - The Vase Breaks Again

Three years after the original incident, Primrose was eight.
We were at Anatole’s house for Thanksgiving.
The repaired Meissen vase stood inside its glass cabinet.
Safe.
Another vase sat on a side table.
Cheap.
Modern.
My father bought it at a hotel gift shop because he thought it looked expensive.
It did not.
Primrose and her cousin were chasing each other.
Against instructions.
Primrose bumped the table.
The cheap vase tipped.
Everyone froze.
It fell onto the carpet.
Did not break.
Primrose stopped running.
Looked at it.
Then at Violetta.
Violetta was across the room.
For one second, the old memory passed through both faces.
Violetta did not move toward her.
She said:
“Are you okay?”
Primrose nodded.
“Vase?”
Violetta picked it up.
“Unfortunately.”
My father said:
“I paid eighty dollars for that.”
I replied:
“You were robbed.”
Primrose laughed.
Then:
“Sorry, Grandpa.”
Anatole said:
“Walk inside.”
“Okay.”
That was it.
No slap.
No family silence.
No lecture about ruining everything.
A child made a mistake.
An adult corrected behavior.
The vase survived.

Even if it had not, Primrose would have.
That was the hierarchy we should have had all along.
