Chapter 17 - The Family Council

The family council met six weeks after the wedding.

Not at Marcelli House.

Neutral conference center.

Twelve adult family members.

Julia Tan present as governance counsel.

Alden? Different prior story, no. Here counsel is Julia.

I had no bodyguards inside except one outside.

This needed to feel like governance, not intimidation.

Beatrice chaired by tradition.

When she entered, Julia said:

“Mrs. Marcelli, the first agenda item concerns whether you should continue as chair during review. It would be inappropriate for you to preside over that item.”

Beatrice stared.

Then sat at an ordinary seat.

Good.

No one pulled it away.

Procedure.

The council had no direct corporate control.

But its recommendations influenced use of family-owned homes, foundation roles, and family partnership nominations.

We voted.

Beatrice suspended as chair for one year.

Renata removed from youth-education committee.

A new rule:

No family “service traditions” involving minors at commercial properties unless approved by parents, venue management, and child-safety guidelines.

Another:

Children are guests unless explicitly participating in age-appropriate volunteer tasks.

Another:

No sleeping in service areas.

Absurd rule to need.

Still.

Beatrice voted against her own suspension.

Her right.

She lost eight to three, with one abstention.

She did not lose her family membership.

No exile.

No confiscation.

A chair can be removed without pretending a person vanishes.

That was the lesson behind the wedding symbolism made real.
