Chapter 24 - Mara and I Learn to Co-Parent Differently

The wedding crisis improved my relationship with Mara in one unexpected way.

We stopped competing over who understood Dahlia better.

Before:

Mara thought I over-relied on family.

I thought Mara overinterpreted Beatrice.

She thought I bought gifts to compensate for work.

I thought she scheduled therapy for every feeling.

Some truth on both sides.

Afterward:

We used specifics.

What did Dahlia say?

What happened?

Who was present?

What is the plan?

No personality diagnoses.

Mara also admitted something.

“I sometimes used your mother as shorthand for everything I hated about your family.”

“Yes.”

“She wasn’t always wrong.”

“No.”

“At five, Dahlia did need more manners.”

I smiled.

“Careful. Beatrice might feel a disturbance in the atmosphere.”

Mara laughed.

That was first easy laugh between us in months.

We were not remarrying.

No romance revival.

We became better parents.

Dahlia benefited more from that than any symbolic family reconciliation.
