Chapter 25 - The First Family Dinner

Dahlia chose to attend a family dinner almost two years later.

Not wedding.

Not Marcelli House.

Italian restaurant.

Private room.

Beatrice invited.

Renata not yet.

Dahlia approved.

Before dinner, Beatrice stood when we entered.

Old instinct.

Then she moved a chair for Dahlia.

Dahlia froze.

Beatrice stopped.

“Would you like this one?”

“Where?”

“Beside your dad.”

Dahlia looked at me.

“Can I sit end?”

“Of course.”

She chose end of table.

Not head.

No one commented.

During dinner, bread basket stopped near her.

Beatrice started to say:

“Pass—”

Then paused.

Dahlia passed it anyway.

Normal help.

No symbolism.

Later a server dropped fork.

Dahlia bent to pick it up.

The server said:

“I’ve got it.”

Dahlia sat back.

No adult said:

Marcellis serve too.

No one made a lesson.

That was progress.
