Chapter 13

Tyler requested mediation before trial.
Emma refused.
Then accepted one meeting after his attorney made clear no settlement depended on it.
Michael did not attend.
General Mitchell did not attend.
Helen sat nearby.
Tyler entered wearing a plain suit.
No expensive watch.
No performance of ruin.
He looked tired.
Emma spoke first.
“Why the cage?”
Tyler closed his eyes.
“I panicked.”
“No.”
He looked up.
“That explains ten seconds.”
She leaned forward.
“You found the key. Locked the door. Turned on the hose. Brought the script outside. Took my phone. Told me what to say.”
Silence.
“That is not panic.”
Tyler stared at his hands.
“I needed Monday.”
There it was.
Emma waited.
“Red Oak was done.”
“Then Red Oak was done.”
“I had employees.”
“So does every failed company.”
“People who trusted me.”
“I trusted you.”
Tyler’s face broke.
Emma continued.
“You were willing to lose their money before you were willing to lose my house.”
“I didn’t think we’d lose it.”
“You offered it as collateral.”
“I thought I could refinance.”
“Using what?”
He had no answer.
Then Emma asked:
“When did you first start telling Michael I was declining?”
Tyler whispered:
“January.”
Nine months earlier.
“Was I?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He kept asking why I was around the house all the time.”
“And?”
“I didn’t want him looking at the accounts.”
There.
Not complicated.
Isolation protected financial control.
Then she asked about the lender videos.
Tyler looked ashamed.
“You always sound sharp in the morning.”
Emma stared at him.
He realized how monstrous the sentence sounded.
“I mean—”
“I know exactly what you mean.”
He covered his face.
Emma asked:
“Did you ever believe I was incompetent?”
“No.”
“Did you ever believe I needed forty hours of care?”
“No.”
“Did you ever believe I wanted the mortgage?”
Tyler started crying.
“At first I thought you might.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No.”
Emma sat back.
Then Tyler asked the question he had probably rehearsed.
“Do you still love me?”
Emma looked at him for a long time.
“Yes.”
He began sobbing.
She did not move.
“Love is not access.”
Tyler looked up.
“Love is not power of attorney.”
Silence.
“And love is definitely not a key.”
He nodded.
May you like
Emma stood.
The meeting was over.
