Chapter 7

Michael’s first instinct was to take control.

Emma stopped him.

They were sitting in her hospital room when he said:

“I’ll handle the house. Accounts. Lawyers. Tyler’s access. Everything.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

Michael froze.

“Mom.”

“You sound exactly like him.”

That landed.

Michael sat back.

“What do you want?”

“Options.”

Not obedience.

Options.

Helen Crawford came to the hospital.

So did an independent geriatric psychiatrist.

Emma requested the evaluation herself.

She did not want anyone later saying Michael had chosen a friendly doctor.

The assessment lasted nearly two hours.

Emma demonstrated no evidence of major neurocognitive disorder.

Some age-consistent forgetfulness.

Anxiety.

Acute stress.

Normal decision-making capacity.

The psychiatrist made one point repeatedly:

Capacity was decision-specific.

Being older did not mean incompetent.

Needing help with online banking did not mean incompetent.

Feeling overwhelmed after abuse did not mean incompetent.

Good.

Then Helen reviewed Emma’s estate and financial documents.

The power of attorney could be revoked immediately.

The challenge was cleanup.

Tyler had used it with banks, insurers, the support trust, medical offices, utilities, and property vendors.

Every institution needed direct notice.

The attempted mortgage needed formal disavowal.

The family support trust needed audit.

Emma’s home needed new locks and security.

Michael offered his staff.

Emma declined.

General Mitchell recommended a security company she had used professionally.

Civilian company.

Licensed.

Independent.

Emma accepted.

That mattered to Michael.

His mother was rebuilding control without simply replacing Tyler with him.

Then Michael disclosed his own financial connection.

Years earlier, the Family Support Trust reimbursed his company for security upgrades at Emma and James’s properties.

He had approved some internal invoices.

If the trust underwent a full audit, his company would be examined too.

Helen looked at him.

“Any reason to worry?”

Michael thought.

“Probably allocation mistakes.”

“How large?”

“I don’t know.”

Emma looked at her son.

Michael continued.

“If we audit Tyler, we audit me.”

May you like

No hesitation.

That was the beginning of Part 8.
