Chapter 14

Tyler’s cases resolved almost two years after the kennel night.

His lawyers challenged several financial counts successfully.

That mattered.

The first lender had rejected Emma’s incomplete video.

The mortgage never closed.

No title transfer occurred.

Some caregiver reimbursements reflected genuine work.

The final prosecution narrowed itself to conduct it could prove.

Unlawful confinement.

Elder abuse.

Coercive and fraudulent conduct connected to the attempted mortgage.

False caregiver reimbursement submissions.

Interference with Emma’s communications and financial administration.

Tyler entered negotiated pleas on several counts and was convicted on another after litigation.

The sentence included a substantial custodial term followed by supervised release.

Restitution.

Civil judgments.

A long-term prohibition on acting as guardian, caregiver, power-of-attorney agent, trustee, or fiduciary for a vulnerable adult.

He lost Red Oak.

Sold his remaining investment property to satisfy debts and judgments.

He was not stripped of every dollar.

He would eventually leave custody with the ability to work again.

Just not from a position where family trust replaced scrutiny.

Michael faced no criminal charges.

The independent audit closed after repayment of his allocation errors.

He stepped off the Family Support Trust’s informal advisory committee voluntarily.

North Atlantic remained in charge.

Emma returned to her house after eleven months.

Not because Michael encouraged her.

Not because General Mitchell did.

One Wednesday morning she simply told Helen:

“I’m ready.”

New locks.

New alarm codes.

No family master key.

Michael received no permanent access.

He joked:

“What if there’s an emergency?”

Emma held up her phone.

“Call me.”

“And if you don’t answer?”

“Call Mitchell.”

Michael looked offended.

General Mitchell, standing in the kitchen, said:

“Rank has privileges.”

May you like

Emma laughed.

It was the first time the house had sounded like hers again.
