Chapter 1 - the locket on the sleeve

The warm golden glow of the crystal chandeliers inside Il Destino reflected off polished marble floors and white linen tablecloths. Soft violin music played in the background, masking the sharp, suffocating tension that had gripped the fine-dining room the moment Ricardo “Rico” Moretti walked in.

At thirty-two, Rico was a feared Mafia boss—tall, handsome, powerfully built, with a cold, commanding presence that made grown men tremble. He wore a perfectly tailored navy Brioni suit, a crisp white dress shirt, a dark tie, a luxury watch, and polished black shoes. Beneath his terrifying reputation was a grieving widower who had no idea how to comfort his traumatized child.

Beside him in the velvet booth sat three-year-old Leo. Blond, angelic, and deeply broken since his mother’s passing six months ago, the toddler wore a light blue formal outfit with a tiny bow tie. His small hands clutched a worn teddy bear so tightly his knuckles were white.

Suddenly, without warning, little Leo began screaming. His high-pitched sobs echoed off the tall glass windows. He kicked his small feet, violently throwing his silver plate across the table, sending gourmet food sliding across the white cloth. The entire room froze in fear. Wealthy patrons lowered their forks, holding their breath.

Rico leaned over, his jaw clenching as he tried to exert control. His voice was a harsh, icy whisper.

"Leo. Basta. Enough."

"No! No! I want no!" Leo shrieked, his face turning red with breathless despair. He swiped his tiny arm across the table, sending a crystal water glass crashing onto the marble floor.

Near the service station, Marco Bellini, the nervous fifty-year-old restaurant manager, wiped sweat from his forehead, backed away in absolute terror, and motioned for the staff to stay back. Dante Moretti, Rico’s massive, six-foot-four head of security, stepped forward cautiously. Bald, muscular, and intimidating, Dante lowered his giant frame to gently lift the screaming boy.

Dante reached for Leo, but the toddler fought wildly, kicking Dante’s broad chest and sobbing hysterically. Frustration boiled over in Rico’s chest. He slammed his broad palm down onto the table with a loud crack that echoed like a gunshot. The guests stared. The restaurant became painfully silent.

"Is everyone in my employment incompetent? Make him stop," Rico growled, his dark eyes burning with frustration.

Near the kitchen doors, twenty-four-year-old Clara Vance watched Leo closely. Beautiful, gentle, emotionally intelligent, and quietly brave, Clara had tired but compassionate eyes, soft brown hair in a loose messy bun, and wore a pale pink waitress dress with a neat apron and black flats. Beside her, Sarah Collins, another waitress in a black-and-white uniform, grabbed Clara’s arm in fear.

"Don’t do it, Clara. That’s the Butcher of Brooklyn," Sarah whispered nervously.

"He’s scared," Clara replied softly. She didn't see a dangerous syndicate boss; she saw a panicked, grieving child.

Clara quietly took a glass of warm milk from the service counter, added a sugar cube, and walked straight toward Rico’s table as every employee watched in disbelief. Marco tried to stop her, but she kept going.

Clara kneels beside Leo instead of touching him. She speaks softly, keeping her voice calm and warm, offering him the warm milk with both hands.

"Hey, sweetheart… nobody’s mad at you. Your throat hurts from crying, doesn’t it?" Clara said gently. "You can hold this. It’s warm."

Leo’s crying slowed. He looked at Clara, then took the milk with shaking little hands. He drank. Within seconds, his frantic sobs quieted into tiny snuffles. The whole restaurant stared in shock. Rico was completely stunned.

Still holding his teddy bear, Leo reached out with his free hand—not toward his father, but toward Clara. He gripped her sleeve tightly and looked up at Rico with teary eyes.

"She smells like Mommy," Leo whispered.

Rico went completely still. Clara’s face changed as emotional warmth filled her chest. Dante and Marco exchanged tense looks. The room felt heavier than before.

Leo pointed weakly at the silver locket hanging beneath Clara’s collar and whispered one final line. Rico’s expression instantly turned from shock to sharp, lethal suspicion.

"Mommy had that too."
