Chapter 3 - the gates of stonewood

An hour later, a fleet of three black armored SUVs wound its way through the iron gates of Stonewood Estate, a massive stone compound tucked away in the secluded hills of Long Island. High security lights illuminated the falling snow, casting long shadows across the snow-covered lawn.
Inside the rear SUV, Leo was fast asleep on Clara's lap, his small hand still linked around her thumb. Clara stared out the tinted window, her heart racing as she observed armed security guards patrolling the perimeter with trained guard dogs.
Rico sat in the front passenger seat, watching her through the rearview mirror. "You look nervous, Miss Vance."
"I’m surrounded by armed guards and entering a compound owned by a man called the Butcher of Brooklyn," Clara said plainly. "Nervous is an understatement."
"If I wanted to hurt you, you wouldn't be riding in the back seat," Rico replied coldly. "You would be in the trunk."
Dante brought the vehicle to a smooth stop outside the grand stone entrance. "We're secure, boss."
Rico stepped out into the crisp night air, opening the rear door himself. He reached in to take Leo, but the moment his broad arms touched the boy, Leo stirred, whimpering in his sleep and clutching Clara’s pink dress even tighter.
Rico paused, his jaw tightening with a mixture of pain and frustration. "Lift him," he told Clara quietly.
Clara carefully scooped the sleeping toddler into her arms, leaning his heavy little head against her shoulder. She followed Rico up the grand marble steps into the cavernous foyer of the mansion. High ceilings, dark mahogany paneling, and antique oil paintings decorated the walls, but the air felt ice-cold and devoid of life.
"Second floor, third door on the left," Rico instructed, pointing up the grand staircase. "That is Leo's nursery. Your room is connected through the adjoining door."
"Thank you," Clara whispered, stepping toward the stairs.
As she passed a large shadowed archway near the formal dining room, an elderly woman in a dark grey housekeeper's uniform stepped out. She stared at Clara with wide, frightened eyes, her gaze fixing instantly on the silver locket resting against Clara’s chest. The woman gasped, making the sign of the cross over her heart before quickly vanishing into the shadows.
Clara felt a chill run down her spine. Why did everyone in this house look at her locket as if it were a curse?
She carried Leo into his room—a massive nursery filled with expensive wooden toys, a grand crib, and rich blue velvet drapes. Yet, it looked touched by sadness. Clara gently laid Leo down on the bed, pulling the soft wool blanket over his shoulders.
As she unbuckled his tiny leather shoes, something fluttered out from the cuff of Leo’s pants. It was a small piece of heavy cream cardstock, folded in half.

Clara picked it up and unfolded it. Written in dark blue ink was a warning:
If he brought you here, you are already in danger. Do not open the locked door at the end of the east wing.
