Chapter 7 - the shadow on the stairs

Rico was out the door before Clara could even move. She sprinted right behind him, her black flats slapping against the hard oak steps as they raced up to the second floor.
Dante was already at the nursery door, his sidearm drawn, his massive frame blocking the entrance.
"What happened?" Rico growled, pushing past Dante.
Inside the nursery, the floor was covered in shattered glass. A tall ceramic lamp had been knocked over, spilling red liquid—cranberry juice—across the white sheepskin rug. Leo was huddled in the corner of his crib, sobbing hysterically, clutching his teddy bear to his chest while pointing a shaking finger at the open balcony door.
"Leo!" Clara rushed past Rico, climbing straight into the wooden crib and gathering the terrified boy into her arms. "I'm here, sweetheart. I'm here. You're safe."
Leo buried his wet face into Clara's neck, his small body trembling violently. "The dark man... he opened the window... he wanted my bear..."
Rico stepped onto the balcony, his eyes scanning the pitch-black garden below. Snow was falling heavily, but fresh footprints were clearly visible on the stone ledge, disappearing down the trellis toward the courtyard.
"Dante! Lock down the perimeter!" Rico barked. "Nobody leaves this compound!"
"On it, boss!" Dante turned and sprinted down the corridor, his radio buzzing with urgent orders.
Clara rocked Leo back and forth, humming a soft, familiar lullaby until his heavy sobs began to fade. As she smoothed down his blond hair, she noticed something sitting on the floor right beside the shattered lamp.
It was a small silver key attached to a black leather ribbon.
Rico picked up the key, his jaw clenching tightly. "This belongs to the east wing."
Clara looked up, her brown eyes wide. "The locked room?"
"Someone wanted Leo frightened enough to scream so we would leave the study," Rico realized, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Clara. "Someone was searching for something in Elena’s locked room while we were downstairs."
May you like
"Bianca," Clara whispered.
Rico’s gaze turned icy. "We find out right now."
