Chapter 9 - the winter gala trap

Bianca reached wildly into her silk gown, pulling a small silver pocket knife from her concealed holster. She lunged forward—not toward Rico, but straight toward Clara and little Leo!

"Clara, look out!" Rico roared.

Clara didn't hesitate. Shielding Leo with her entire body, she spun around, kicking out with her black flat foot with all her strength. Her shoe connected hard with Bianca’s wrist, sending the silver knife flying across the hardwood floor.

Before Bianca could recover, Dante burst through the door, his giant hand grabbing Bianca by the collar of her silk gown and pinning her effortlessly against the stone wall.

"Got her, boss," Dante grunted, disarming her in a second.

Bianca thrashed helplessly against Dante's iron grip, her face twisted in fury. "You can't do this to me! I'm a Moretti! You can't turn me over to the police!"

"The police aren't getting you, Bianca," Rico said coldly, stepping closer and looking down at his treacherous sister-in-law. "The syndicate council handles traitors. You will spend the rest of your days answering for every penny you stole and every lie you told."

Dante dragged the screaming woman out of the studio, her hysterical protests fading down the silent corridor until the heavy front doors slammed shut.

The studio returned to quiet stillness.

Leo lowered his small head onto Clara’s shoulder, letting out a long, peaceful sigh. "Bad lady gone?"

"Yes, sweetheart," Clara whispered, kissing his forehead softly. "The bad lady is gone."

Rico walked over to Clara, standing close to her. For the first time since she had met him at Il Destino, the terrifying, icy mask of the Butcher of Brooklyn was entirely gone. In its place was a man deeply grateful, humbled, and irrevocably changed.

"You saved my son tonight, Clara," Rico said softly, his dark eyes shining with an emotion he hadn't felt in years. "And you brought truth back to this house."

"He saved me too," Clara replied gently, looking at the sleeping boy in her arms. "We're family, Rico. Whether we planned it or not."

Rico reached out, his long fingers gently touching the silver locket resting against her chest. "Then stay. Not as a hired nanny. Stay as family."

Clara looked into his eyes and gave a quiet, meaningful nod.
