Chapter 2 - the silver pendant

The heavy silence inside Il Destino lingered like smoke after a blast. Rico slowly rose from the booth, his polished black shoes making a slow, rhythmic tap against the marble floor. At six-foot-two, his shadow fell entirely over Clara, who remained kneeling beside Leo. Dante shifted his stance, his hand resting casually inside his jacket lining.

"Where did you get that locket?" Rico asked, his voice dropped to a quiet, dangerous frequency that vibrated through the room.

Clara kept her hand gently on Leo's tiny back, refusing to let the toddler feel her sudden spike of fear. She met Rico's dark gaze directly. "It belonged to my mother. She gave it to me before she passed."

Rico reached down, his long, calloused fingers delicately brushing against the silver pendant hanging from Clara's neck. He flipped it over to inspect the back. Carved into the tarnished silver was a tiny crest featuring an olive branch wrapped around a dagger—the private seal of the Vance family, an old-money estate from upstate New York.

"Your name is Clara Vance," Rico murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Who sent you here tonight?"

"Nobody sent me," Clara answered firmly, her tone steady despite Marco covering his mouth in terror nearby. "I’ve worked six-hour night shifts here for eight months to pay off my late mother's medical debt. Ask Marco if you don't believe me."

Marco scrambled forward, nodding vigorously while trembling. "I-it's true, Mr. Moretti! She’s just a waitress! A very good waitress!"

Leo tugged hard on Clara’s pink apron sleeve, burying his face into her side. "Don't go, warm milk lady. Stay."

Rico looked down at his son. In six long months of silence and explosive night terrors, Leo had never spoken more than three words at a time. Now, he was holding onto this stranger as if she were an anchor in a stormy sea.

"Pack your things," Rico commanded flatly, looking back at Clara.

Clara frowned slightly, standing up. "Excuse me?"

"You're fired from this restaurant," Rico said, pulling a thick roll of hundred-dollar bills from his Brioni jacket and tossing it onto the table. "And you're hired as my son's private live-in caretaker. Five thousand dollars a week."

Sarah gasped from the kitchen doorway. Marco’s mouth hung open.

"I am not a servant for hire, Mr. Moretti," Clara said, her rosy cheeks flushing with quiet defiance. "And I don't move into strangers' houses."

Rico leaned down, his face inches from hers, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Look at my son's eyes, Miss Vance. He hasn't slept a full hour since the night his mother died. If you walk out that door, he goes back to screaming until his lungs bleed. Is that what your compassionate heart wants?"

Clara looked at little Leo, who was clutching his teddy bear and looking up at her with big, watery eyes. She swallowed hard, realizing she was walking straight into the lion's den.

"I have conditions," Clara said softly. "I answer only to Leo's needs, not your syndicate orders. And I keep my locket."

Rico stared at her for three agonizing seconds before giving a single, cold nod. "Dante, bring the car round."
