Chapter 5 - Leo tells one piece

The forensic interviewer did not ask Leo everything at once.

He was ten.

Traumatized.

Medically fragile.

Repeated interviews could contaminate memory.

So trained investigators proceeded carefully.

Leo said Clara was there the day he disappeared.

“She said Dad had a surprise downstairs.”

He followed her.

Basement service corridor.

Then door shut.

Julian arrived later.

Did Leo understand kidnapping at five?

No.

He thought he was in trouble.

Clara told him:

“Your dad is sick.”

Then:

“You have to stay hidden or bad men will hurt him.”

For weeks he believed he was protecting me.

That sentence destroyed something in me.

Then time.

At first, he was kept in a small basement guest utility room.

Later moved through service passage when workers came.

Sometimes another property?

He remembered a room with green walls.

Police would investigate.

Food came mostly from Clara.

Sometimes Julian.

Sometimes packaged snacks.

Water.

Books.

Old tablet with no internet.

Why not scream?

He did.

Early.

Clara told him house security would kill me if anyone found him.

A five-year-old believed.

Later he learned she was lying.

Then why not escape?

Doors locked.

Service passage hidden.

Windows in utility areas covered.

As he grew older, he became more capable.

He began exploring.

Found maintenance access.

Found recorder.

Where?

“Julian dropped it.”

When?

Mini voice recorder used by Julian for meeting notes.

Leo hid it.

Batteries?

Device rechargeable via old maintenance outlet.

He learned by watching.

Recorded conversations when Clara or Julian entered.

Not every day.

Fragments.

Then:

“Dad, I tried.”

“Tried what?”

“To get out.”

“What happened?”

“Aunt Clara found me.”

“Did she hurt you?”

Leo looked away.

The interviewer did not push.

Later he said:

May you like

“She made it darker.”

That was enough for that day.
