Chapter 8 - Clara talks

Clara requested proffer through counsel.

Not immunity.

Discussion.

She wanted deal.

Prosecutors required truth and corroboration.

Her story:

Julian proposed plan after Leo’s disappearance? No.

Before.

That mattered.

He had been worried Carter Holdings could never be controlled while I remained dominant shareholder and emotionally stable.

Why Leo?

Not originally.

Clara claimed the plan began as extortion.

She was supposed to take Leo for several hours.

Create panic.

Then Julian would “find” him through private security contacts and become even more indispensable.

Absurd.

Then something changed.

When Leo disappeared, police response was larger than expected.

Security footage gaps pointed toward internal access.

Clara panicked.

Returning him risked exposure.

Julian said:

“Wait.”

Hours became days.

Then the idea evolved.

My grief destabilized me.

Julian saw opportunity.

He told Clara:

“If Arthur believes Leo is gone, he will eventually stop making decisions himself.”

Clara said she wanted to return Leo after two weeks.

Why not?

Julian threatened to expose her as kidnapper.

She was trapped?

Partly.

But she continued for five years.

Fed Leo.

Moved him.

Lied to me.

Accepted money.

No victimizing herself into innocence.

Then motive.

Why agree initially?

Clara owed:

$2.6 million.

Bad investments.

Luxury property debt.

Private loans.

She had hidden it.

Julian offered money.

$300,000 first.

Then ongoing.

Blue Ash payments.

Total from Julian-linked entities:

$740,000 over five years.

She used much to service debt.

Then presumed death.

Did she participate in legal declaration?

She gave statements describing search.

Yes.

Did she plant evidence of death?

No.

No body.

No fake blood.

No staged remains.

Just absence.

The law eventually did the rest.

Then recorder line:

“Once Arthur signs tomorrow, everything will belong to us.”

Was that literal?

Clara said Julian often spoke grandly.

“Us” meant:

He controls company.

She receives enough money to disappear.

Then what papers?

She did not understand details.

That made sense.

May you like

She was not financial architect.

Julian was.
