Chapter 11 - Richard’s voice

Audio analysis took weeks.

The phone recording was compressed.

Male voice distorted by the speaker and nursery acoustics.

Experts could compare features.

Not produce magical certainty from a waveform.

Richard voluntarily provided a voice sample through counsel.

So did three male employees linked to Victoria’s communications.

The first report concluded:

Richard could not be excluded.

Certain speech characteristics were consistent.

Not identification.

Then subpoenaed phone records changed the picture.

The call occurred at 10:41 p.m.

Victoria’s phone connected through an encrypted calling application.

App metadata did not reveal content.

But device records showed a preceding call to:

Richard Vale’s chief of staff, Martin Shaw.

Forty-eight.

Former policy adviser.

Longtime Vale employee.

Then Martin’s phone connected to Richard’s private office Wi-Fi during the relevant time.

Was Martin the speaker?

Voice comparison:

Closer than Richard.

Much closer.

I stared at the report.

“So it’s Martin?”

Emily said:

“Likely candidate. Not proof by itself.”

I thought of the photograph.

Victoria beside Richard.

My brain had already convicted the father.

Maybe wrong.

Investigators obtained Martin’s devices under warrant later after other evidence emerged.

One message from Victoria:

Dad says Ethan is never going to move unless the baby becomes real to him.

Martin:

I’ll call.

There.

Dad says.

Then Martin called.

So Richard may have originated the idea.

Martin delivered the instruction.

Layers.

Again.

Powerful people often create enough intermediaries that everyone can later describe their role narrowly.

Richard:

I never made that call.

True.

Martin:

I never touched the baby.

True.

Victoria:

I never planned to seriously injure him.

Maybe.

And Leo still ended up coughing under steam.

Responsibility can be distributed without disappearing.
