Chapter 13 - Richard’s emails

Richard used email too much for a supposedly calculating man.

Good.

One month before the nursery incident:

Richard to Victoria:

Ethan’s current plan gives you comfort but no durable seat in family governance. Once married, that will become intolerable.

Victoria:

I don’t care about board seats.

Richard:

You will when every decision involving your own household runs through Katherine’s child and trustees appointed before you arrived.

Legally inaccurate.

Emotionally provocative.

Another:

The pediatric issue may finally make him understand the weakness of concentrating succession in Leo.

Victoria:

He says Leo is fine.

Richard:

He needs to understand “fine today” is not a continuity plan.

None of that instructed harm.

Then Martin entered.

Richard copied:

Martin can help you organize the facts so Ethan sees the full risk.

The next day Martin began messaging Victoria about feeding logs.

Later:

Richard to Martin:

Do not let this become theater. I want Ethan persuaded, not panicked into stupidity.

That message helped Richard.

Then another three days later:

Martin:

He won’t move unless the child’s condition feels immediate.

Richard:

Then make it immediate in the presentation.

Dangerous wording.

Presentation.

Not child.

Richard later argued he meant:

Prepare the documents around current medical concerns.

Then Martin:

Understood.

Two hours later he messaged Victoria:

Need the baby to look unstable on paper.

There.

Did Richard know how Martin translated?

Unclear.

Then after Leo’s pediatric appointment:

Richard to Victoria:

If Ethan sees another weak month of growth, he may finally agree there cannot be one point of failure.

Another weak month.

He expected a naturally weak month?

Or manipulated?

This was the gray zone.

Prosecutors had to prove knowledge beyond offensive strategy.

The civil case could infer more.

Criminal law required more.

I wanted certainty.

The evidence kept giving degrees.

That was infuriating.

Reality rarely respects the emotional clarity of a nursery recording.
