Chapter 1 - The old phone in the drawer

My name is Natalie Mercer.
I was thirty-six years old, seven months pregnant, and standing barefoot in my own kitchen when I realized my husband had not failed to stop an attack.
He had expected it.
That distinction changed everything.
Sabrina Cole stood near the counter with a stainless-steel soup ladle in her hand.
She was thirty-four.
Beautiful.
Controlled in public.
The woman my husband Ryan had repeatedly described as:
“Just our finance director.”
My son Caleb was six.
My daughter Mia was four.
They were pressed against the lower cabinets, crying.
Ryan stood near the breakfast table.
And for one terrible second before Rachel entered, I saw his face.
Not panic.
Not surprise.
Satisfaction.
Then the front door opened.
Police entered.
Everything became noise.
One officer disarmed Sabrina.
Another separated Ryan from us.
Rachel grabbed my shoulders.
“Nat. Look at me.”
I did.
“Are you hurt?”
“My stomach’s okay.”
“You sure?”
“No.”
That was the truth.
Then Ryan shouted:
“She attacked Sabrina first!”
And I remembered the old phone.
“Drawer.”
Rachel stared.
May you like
“What?”
“Phone. Play the beginning.”
