Chapter 3 - The hospital

Police sent me to the hospital.

Not because I collapsed.

Because I was pregnant and had been struck.

Sabrina had hit my shoulder and upper arm with the ladle before the scene shown in the final seconds of the confrontation.

She had also shoved me into the counter.

My injuries:

Heavy bruising.

A superficial cut near my elbow.

No fracture.

No head injury.

Most importantly:

No placental injury.

No sign of preterm labor.

The baby’s heartbeat was normal.

I cried when they told me.

Not elegantly.

Not quietly.

Caleb and Mia were examined too.

Neither had been struck.

They were frightened.

May you like

That mattered.

Children do not need bruises to be affected by violence in their kitchen.
