Chapter 2 - Why there was a hidden phone

The phone was six years old.
Cracked corner.
Weak battery.
No active cellular plan.
Rachel had set it up for me three weeks earlier.
My sister was a family-law attorney.
Not my attorney at first.
My sister.
There is a difference.
I had told her:
“Ryan keeps saying conversations happened differently.”
She asked:
“What do you mean?”
“He says I screamed when I didn’t.”
“Anything else?”
“He says I threatened to take the kids. I didn’t.”
“Has he ever hurt you?”
“No.”
That answer had been true.
Then I corrected:
“He blocked the door once.”
Rachel became quiet.
“Has he gone through your phone?”
“Yes.”
So she gave me the old device.
Wi-Fi only.
Cloud backup.
Emergency shortcut.
If I pressed the volume buttons in sequence, it would:
Start recording.
Send Rachel an SOS through Wi-Fi.
Share the house location.
Not magic.
Just automation.
I hid it in the kitchen junk drawer because Ryan never looked there.
That afternoon, when Sabrina arrived furious, I pressed the buttons through the half-open drawer.
Then I stepped away.

I never knew whether it worked.
It had.
