Chapter 1 - The Locket on the Floor

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The silver tray hit the carpet first.
Maisie Hart hit it a second later.
The eight-year-old girl gasped as wealthy guests turned toward the center of the Castellano ballroom.
Vivienne stood above her in a crimson gown.
Perfect posture.
Diamond earrings.
A smile with no kindness in it.
“Servant blood belongs on the floor.”
Maisie blinked back tears.
She had only been helping Grace Hart, the housemaid everyone believed was her mother.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Dominic Castellano entered.
Conversation died instantly.
He had spent most of his adult life watching powerful men become nervous when he walked into a room.
Tonight, he barely noticed them.
He saw Maisie.
On the floor.
And Vivienne standing over her.
Dominic crossed the ballroom.
“What happened?”
Nobody answered.
He reached down and pulled Maisie carefully to her feet.
“You hurt?”
She shook her head.
“No, sir.”
Something slipped from beneath her cardigan.
An old silver locket fell onto the marble.
CLICK.
It opened.
Dominic looked down.
And stopped breathing.
Inside was a faded photograph.
A much younger Dominic stood beside a dark-haired woman near the Atlantic shoreline.
Elena Hart.
The woman he had once planned to marry.
The woman who disappeared from his life almost nine years ago without explanation.
Dominic picked up the locket.
His hand tightened.
“Where did you get this?”
Maisie looked frightened.
“My mom.”
Vivienne moved.
Fast.
She lunged for the locket.
Dominic caught her wrist before she touched it.
“What are you doing?”
“Give me that.”
“No.”
“Dominic—”
He released her.
Vivienne reached again.
Dominic blocked her.
When she tried to push past him toward Maisie, he struck her once across the face.
The ballroom exploded in gasps.
Vivienne stumbled into a banquet chair.
When she rose, her confidence had cracked.
“She was never supposed to find you.”
Dominic stared at her.
“What did you just say?”
Maisie slowly reached toward the locket.
“There’s something else.”
From behind the photograph, she pulled a tiny folded hospital bracelet.
Dominic unfolded it.
BABY GIRL HART.
Eight years earlier.
Then he saw two handwritten initials beneath the printed name.
D.C.
His initials.
Dominic slowly looked at Maisie.
Vivienne went pale.
And suddenly the most powerful man in the room understood that everyone might have been lying to him about the little girl standing beside him.

👉 Dominic had found his initials on Maisie’s birth bracelet—but the person who could explain why they were there had spent eight years making sure he never asked the question.
