Chapter 12 - The Vote Moved to Midnight

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The vote was scheduled for 11:30 p.m.
Less than four hours away.
Vivienne claimed “market conditions” required immediate action.
Jonathan called it what it was.
Panic.
Dominic’s first instinct was to storm into the boardroom.
He didn’t.
That was exactly what Vivienne expected.
Instead, he filed.
DNA certification.
Elena’s notarized statement.
The hospital archive.
The forged amendment.
Margaret Bell’s sworn declaration.
The recording.
The transfer to Richard Vale.
All of it.
Then Jonathan sought an emergency injunction.
The judge agreed to hear arguments remotely at 10:00 p.m.
Vivienne’s lawyers attacked everything.
The recording might be incomplete.
The money transfer could have been for unrelated legal services.
Elena was dead and could not be cross-examined.
The DNA established biology, not trust rights.
Jonathan answered point by point.
Then the judge asked one question.
“Why was the child not disclosed within twelve months?”
Vivienne’s attorney stood.
“Because Elena Hart chose secrecy.”
Dominic nearly spoke.
Jonathan stopped him.
Then Grace raised her hand from the back of the conference room.
Jonathan looked at her.
“What?”
“I have something.”
She handed him an old phone.
“I forgot I kept this.”
Dominic frowned.
The device belonged to Grace from eight years earlier.
She had stored it in a box after changing numbers.
On it were text messages from Elena.
One message read:
I tried again. They said Dominic refuses contact.
Another:
Vivienne says if I file paternity, they will come for Maisie.
Another:
I’m sending him a letter through Grace.
Grace looked at Dominic.
“I mailed it myself.”
Dominic never received it.
Jonathan searched the family-office mail logs.
Archived scans existed because high-security correspondence was routinely recorded.
The letter arrived.
It was scanned.
Then marked:
RETURN TO SENDER — PER V. CASTELLANO.
Dominic stared.
Vivienne had personally intercepted Elena’s letter.
The judge reviewed the record.
At 10:48 p.m., she issued a temporary order.
The Legacy Trust could not be restructured until Maisie’s heirship claim was resolved.
Dominic exhaled.
Vivienne had lost the midnight vote.
But she wasn’t finished.
At 11:06, a message came from the estate.
Vivienne had returned.
Without permission.
Dominic drove back.
He found her standing in the ballroom.
The same room where she had shoved Maisie to the floor.
She was holding the red metal box.
Burned.
Blackened.
But not destroyed.
Dominic stopped.
“You kept it.”
Vivienne’s expression was strange.
Defeated.
Furious.
Almost relieved.
“There’s something inside you haven’t seen.”
Dominic looked at the box.
“What?”
Vivienne held it tighter.
“The reason Elena really disappeared.”

👉 The court had stopped Vivienne’s financial plan, but she still possessed one final secret about Elena—and for the first time, Dominic wasn’t sure he wanted to hear it.
