Chapter 10 - Three Days Before the Vote

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Dominic canceled every meeting.

Nothing mattered more than Friday.

Jonathan reviewed the proposed restructuring.

At first glance, it looked legitimate.

Tax efficiency.

Consolidated management.

Reduced liability.

Then they followed the ownership percentages.

The new holding company gave one class of shares enhanced voting rights.

Those shares would be controlled by the acting family trustee.

Vivienne.

Dominic stared at the page.

“She wrote herself into control.”

“Not permanently.”

“How long?”

“Potentially fifteen years.”

That was permanent enough.

Dominic called an emergency family board meeting.

Vivienne appeared by video with two attorneys.

She looked flawless.

“You’re disrupting legitimate business because a servant produced a necklace.”

Dominic remained calm.

“A hospital archive produced my name.”

“An outdated file.”

“A nurse confirmed it.”

“A disgruntled former nurse.”

“Elena’s signature was forged.”

“Prove it.”

Dominic leaned back.

“I will.”

Vivienne smiled.

“Before Friday?”

There it was.

Confidence.

She believed time protected her.

Then Maisie entered Dominic’s office unexpectedly.

Grace hurried behind her.

“I told her not to—”

“It’s okay.”

Maisie held the locket.

“I found another thing.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Where?”

“Inside.”

She had discovered the back plate could lift.

Beneath it was a tiny strip of paper rolled tightly into the hinge.

Grace carefully removed it.

Numbers.

Six groups.

Jonathan looked over Dominic’s shoulder.

“That’s not a phone number.”

Dominic recognized the first four digits.

“Safe-deposit box.”

His father had used the same bank.

The strip listed a branch number and box number.

Authorized name:

ELENA HART.

Grace stared.

“Elena never told me.”

Jonathan checked the bank.

The account still existed.

Dormant.

Fees had been automatically paid from a small deposit for years.

Access required either Elena or a court order.

Elena was dead.

Maisie was her daughter.

Grace had legal guardianship paperwork establishing that relationship.

Within hours, Jonathan secured limited access for estate identification purposes.

The bank opened the box under supervision.

Inside was no money.

No jewelry.

Only documents.

A cassette recorder.

Three sealed envelopes.

And a notarized statement.

Dominic picked up the first envelope.

FOR DOMINIC.

The second:

FOR MAISIE.

The third:

IF VIVIENNE CASTELLANO EVER CLAIMS I LIED.

No one spoke.

Jonathan looked at Dominic.

“Well.”

Dominic stared at the envelope.

Elena had anticipated this exact moment eight years earlier.

👉 Vivienne had spent days attacking Elena as a liar—but Elena had left behind a sealed statement specifically for the day Vivienne tried to do exactly that.
