Chapter 18 - The Ballroom Door

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Almost a year passed before Maisie entered the ballroom again.

Nobody asked her to.

Dominic was meeting with staff when he noticed her standing in the doorway.

She wore jeans.

Sneakers.

Her silver locket.

The room was empty of guests.

No orchestra.

No crimson gown.

No tray.

Dominic approached slowly.

“You okay?”

Maisie nodded.

“I think so.”

She walked toward the place where Vivienne had shoved her.

Nothing marked the carpet.

Of course not.

Carpets didn’t remember.

People did.

Maisie stood there.

“She said servant blood belongs on the floor.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“I believed her for a minute.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“Everyone was staring.”

Dominic crouched.

“Listen to me.”

Maisie met his eyes.

“There is no blood on Earth that belongs beneath somebody else.”

She nodded.

Then looked around.

“Can we change this room?”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

They did.

Not completely.

The chandeliers remained.

The marble.

The ocean windows.

But Dominic changed what the room was used for.

The next Castellano Foundation event was not a private gala for wealthy donors.

It was a scholarship dinner for children of household employees, service workers, drivers, cooks, maintenance crews, and community staff.

Grace protested when Dominic named one scholarship for Elena Hart.

“You don’t have to turn her into a symbol.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why?”

“Because she wanted Maisie to have choices.”

Grace considered that.

Then nodded.

At the first dinner, Dominic asked Grace to sit beside him.

She refused.

“I’m working.”

“You don’t work here anymore.”

That was true.

Dominic had offered Grace enough financial security to stop housekeeping work permanently.

She chose instead to manage the new Elena Hart Family Support Fund.

“I’m still busy.”

Maisie grabbed her hand.

“Sit.”

Grace laughed.

She sat.

Nobody shoved anyone.

Nobody chose seats based on status.

When dessert arrived, Maisie looked around the room.

Then whispered to Dominic—

“This is better.”

“Yes.”

“Vivienne would hate it.”

Dominic tried not to smile.

“Probably.”

Maisie smiled for him.

Then Jonathan entered with a folder.

Dominic frowned.

“We’re done with folders.”

“Not this one.”

He handed it to Maisie.

Inside was the final trust judgment.

Her rights had been permanently confirmed.

No appeal remained.

No hidden vote could remove them.

Maisie looked confused.

“So what do I get?”

Dominic answered—

“Choices.”

“That’s it?”

Grace laughed.

“That’s the expensive part.”
