Chapter 1

The first thing Damien Corsetti did after breaking the black card was call for a doctor.
Not his attorney.
Not his security chief.
A doctor.
Elara was sitting against the hospital pillows, clutching newborn Luca so tightly that a nurse gently asked her to loosen her arms.
Her shoulder hurt where Sabina had driven it against the rail. Her scalp burned. She had delivered Luca less than twenty-four hours earlier, and she was still exhausted from a difficult labor.
Damien approached the bed.
“Are you hurt anywhere else?”
Elara looked at him.
“Your mother tried to take our son.”
“I saw.”
“Your sister wanted my PIN.”
“I saw that too.”
“Then stop asking me questions and make sure they can't come back.”
Damien turned to his security director, Michael Trent.
“Neither woman enters this hospital wing again without Elara's written permission. Preserve the hallway footage. Cooperate with hospital security and police.”
Beatrice straightened her pearls.
“Damien, don't be ridiculous. I'm his grandmother.”
Damien didn't look at her.
“Then you should have acted like one.”
Sabina sat in the visitor chair, breathing hard.
“You don't understand what that card controls.”
Elara answered before Damien could.
“I understand exactly what it controls. That's why I reported it stolen.”
Sabina's expression changed.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
Damien noticed.
The black card was not an ordinary credit card.
It belonged to the Corsetti Family Reserve, a private financial arrangement established years earlier to cover medical emergencies, household expenses, and approved family support.
Elara had become an authorized cardholder after marrying Damien.
Beatrice was the reserve's original administrator.
Sabina handled much of its paperwork.
Damien rarely used it.
He assumed it was a convenience account.
That morning, Elara had discovered the black card missing from her hospital purse.
She called the issuer and reported it stolen.
She also requested that any attempted use be investigated.
Sabina had arrived hours later demanding the PIN.
Now Damien wanted to know why.
Rebecca Sloan, the family's outside attorney, arrived before midnight.
She examined the broken card, listened to Elara's account, and asked one question.
“Who benefits if Elara enters that PIN?”
Sabina said nothing.
Beatrice stared at the floor.
May you like
Rebecca looked at Damien.
“Then we need to find out before anyone touches the reserve again.”
