Chapter 12

The Corsetti Family Reserve was rebuilt under independent trustees.

Beatrice no longer chaired anything.

Sabina no longer prepared invoices.

Meridian's contract was terminated after the audit found inadequate controls and failures to disclose related-party relationships.

A new administrator was selected through competitive review.

Beneficiaries received direct explanations of their rights.

They could request independent reimbursement where the governing documents allowed it.

Changes to beneficiary status required verified consent and legal review.

No one could use a card transaction alone to alter a person's financial authority.

The reserve recovered substantial funds through settlements, insurance where applicable, and restitution.

It also paid for the forensic investigation.

The final balance was lower than Damien wanted.

But the remaining money was governed properly.

He considered that a better inheritance than a larger fund controlled by fear.

The wider review embarrassed him.

Several relatives had received preferential treatment without clear documentation.

A cousin had approved travel reimbursements for himself.

An older family adviser had directed contracts to a friend's company.

Some transactions were improper.

Others were merely sloppy.

The auditors treated them differently.

Damien accepted the report's criticism of his own oversight.

For years, he had treated the reserve as his mother's responsibility.

He signed acknowledgments.

Attended occasional meetings.

Asked whether anyone needed more money.

He never asked enough about who controlled the system.

Elara had asked.

And been treated as ungrateful.

One evening, after Luca finally fell asleep, she confronted Damien about that.

“You know what hurt before the hospital?”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Every time I said your mother was overstepping, you told me she meant well.”

“I did.”

“She did mean well sometimes.”

“Yes.”

“But you used that to end the conversation.”

Damien lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“I don't want to spend the rest of my marriage proving I'm allowed to say no.”

“You won't.”

Elara shook her head.

“Don't promise me that because you're scared of losing me.”

He waited.

“Promise me you'll listen when the next problem is smaller.”

Damien considered that.

Then nodded.

“That's fair.”

She leaned back against the sofa.

“Good.”

Luca stirred in his bassinet.

Both parents turned toward him.

Elara smiled faintly.

“He has terrible timing.”

Damien looked at their son.

May you like

“Apparently it runs in the family.”

For the first time in weeks, Elara laughed.
