Chapter 8

Beatrice offered a settlement through counsel.

She would resign as reserve administrator.

Sabina would surrender her interest in Northbridge.

Northbridge would refund disputed payments.

Elara would retain her independent benefits.

Beatrice would agree not to contact Luca without parental permission.

In exchange, Damien would keep the financial investigation private.

No voluntary referrals.

No outside review of older reserve transactions.

No public correction of the governance records.

Several relatives urged him to accept.

One said:

“Your mother is sixty-five. Sabina's business is finished. Why destroy the family over paperwork?”

Elara answered before Damien could.

“They attacked me in a hospital.”

The room went silent.

Damien looked at Rebecca.

“What happens if we open everything?”

Rebecca answered plainly.

“The reserve's prior transactions may be examined. Your own approvals may be questioned. Other family members could face scrutiny. The bank could suspend disbursements.”

“Medical payments?”

“We'd need an emergency arrangement to protect legitimate beneficiaries.”

“Do that first.”

Rebecca nodded.

Damien then authorized an independent forensic audit covering seven years of reserve activity.

Every Meridian payment.

Every Northbridge invoice.

Every related-party interest.

Every beneficiary-status change.

Every exceptional disbursement.

The reserve's insurer and financial institutions would receive appropriate notices.

Outside counsel would have authority to refer suspected fraud, false records, or other misconduct to regulators or law enforcement without seeking permission from Damien or his family.

The hospital assault and attempted removal of Luca would remain separate matters.

Damien supplied the full security footage, witness statements, stolen-card report, and records of the declined transactions.

He included the footage of himself pushing Sabina into the chair.

No missing seconds.

No special family exception.

He also authorized a review of his own governance signatures.

“If I approved something improper, put my name in the report.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“You understand this may expose people who had nothing to do with the hospital incident.”

“Yes.”

“And some may be relatives you still care about.”

“Yes.”

“And the review could become expensive.”

Damien glanced toward Elara.

“She paid the price of keeping things comfortable for everybody else.”

He signed.

“Not again.”

Within forty-eight hours, the reserve bank suspended exceptional transfers.

Meridian's contract was placed under independent review.

Northbridge lost access to new reserve payments.

Emergency medical expenses were moved to a temporary account supervised by outside trustees.

Sabina's attorney called Damien.

“You're putting dozens of family members at risk.”

Damien answered through Rebecca.

“Then make sure the people who actually need support continue receiving it.”

The records were now beyond Beatrice's control.

And beyond his own.
