Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Security Hub

Silence descended upon the study, so heavy that the sound of rain against the window felt deafening.
Adrian did not reach for a weapon, nor did he raise his voice. He simply leaned back in his leather chair, his hands resting on the wooden armrests, his black onyx ring catching the dim desk light.
"Explain, Marco," Adrian said quietly.
Marco pulled his personal security fob from his pocket and laid it on the desk beside the diagnostic tablet. "My token hasn't left my belt all day, Adrian. But forty-eight hours ago, when I was supervising the supply delivery at the harbor terminal, the system experienced a three-second data flicker. Someone cloned my frequency."
"Who had access to the harbor terminal?" Adrian demanded.
"Dominic Falcone’s logistics team," Marco replied. "They were sharing the pier space for their shipment imports."
Dominic Falcone was the head of the Falcone syndicate—a long-time business ally of the DeLuca family who had supported Adrian’s ascension after the fire six years ago.
Before Adrian could process the implication, a soft knock sounded at the study door. Teresa walked in, holding Emma’s small pink backpack.
"Adrian," Teresa said, her voice filled with quiet concern. "I was helping Emma unpack her clothes in the guest suite. I found this tucked into the bottom lining of her bag."
Teresa reached into the backpack and pulled out a delicate, vintage silver locket attached to a fine chain.
Adrian took the locket from her hand. He pressed the small side catch, and the silver heart clicked open. Inside was not a photograph, but a micro-audio recording card no larger than a fingernail.
"Set up the reader, Marco," Adrian ordered.
Marco quickly connected a micro-card reader to the desktop monitor. A soft static filled the quiet room, followed by the sound of a man’s low, familiar voice speaking through the speakers.
Adrian stopped breathing. It was Julian’s voice—recorded six months ago.
"Clara, if you are listening to this, it means Falcone has tracked our location in upstate," Julian’s voice echoed softly. "Dominic Falcone was the one who paid the arsonists six years ago. He wanted Adrian to take over the family because he believed Adrian was easier to manipulate through grief. But Adrian never broke. Now Falcone knows I survived, and he will stop at nothing to eliminate the evidence before I can reach my brother."
The recording clicked off into static.
Adrian stood up slowly, his broad frame radiating an unholy, terrifying rage. His entire life for the last six years—his grief, his isolation, his endless wars against rival families—had been orchestrated by the man he had called an uncle.

Suddenly, every light in the mansion went completely dark.
The emergency power generators failed to engage. Down the hallway, a muffled metallic crash echoed from the guest wing where Emma was sleeping.
