Chapter 8 - The Ghost on the Tower

Pier 42 was a dark, deserted shipping terminal jutting out into the black waters of the East River. Towering metal cargo containers were stacked three stories high, casting deep shadows across the wet pavement under the dim yellow glare of overhead security floodlights.
At eleven fifty-five PM, Adrian’s black SUV pulled into the center of the open staging area, coming to a stop fifty yards from three dark luxury sedans idling near the water's edge.
Adrian stepped out alone, wearing his black three-piece suit and wide-brimmed hat, his hands resting casually at his sides. The black onyx family ring glinted under the harsh floodlights.
Standing near the edge of the pier was Dominic Falcone—a fifty-five-year-old man in an expensive navy coat, flanked by eight heavily armed mercenaries.
Standing beside Falcone, held firmly by her arm, was six-year-old Emma. She looked small against the towering shipping containers, but her chin was held high, her dark braids wet from the mist.
"You're right on time, Adrian," Falcone called out, a smug smile stretching across his face. "I always admired your discipline."
"Where is my brother, Dominic?" Adrian demanded, his voice echoing across the open pier.
Falcone laughed softly. "Julian is a ghost, Adrian. He died six years ago in that fire, and he’s going to die for real tonight—right after you hand over that ring."
Falcone raised his hand, gesturing toward two of his mercenaries who stepped forward with raised weapons. "Take the ring from his finger."
Before the guards could take two steps, a sharp, high-velocity crack echoed from the top of the massive shipping crane towering sixty feet above the pier.
A high-intensity shock flare detonated directly between Falcone’s feet, exploding in a blinding flash of white light and sound.
Falcone’s mercenaries stumbled backward, blinded and disoriented, dropping their weapons as the shockwave rattled the metal containers.
Out of the shadows of the crane tower, a tall, agile figure dropped twenty feet down an iron ladder, landing with practiced grace onto the wet pavement.
He wore a dark tactical coat, his dark hair brushed back, his sharp jawline framed by light stubble. Around his piercing eyes, he bore an unmistakable, striking resemblance to Adrian.
It was Julian DeLuca.
"Step away from my daughter, Dominic," Julian growled, pulling a tactical weapon and aiming it directly at Falcone's chest.
Emma’s face lit up with pure joy. "Daddy!" she cried out.
Adrian moved with blinding speed, closing the distance between himself and Falcone’s disoriented guards, neutralizing two of them with heavy, powerful strikes before grabbing Emma into his massive arms and shielding her with his body.

Marco and his recovery team emerged from the surrounding container stacks, surrounding Falcone’s remaining men with raised weapons.
Within ninety seconds, the pier fell completely silent, save for the sound of the river waves crashing against the wooden pilings.
