Chapter 4 - The Intruder in the Shadows

The darkness inside the mansion was absolute, broken only by the distant flashes of lightning through the high hallway windows.
Adrian moved with lightning speed, pulling his heavy sidearm from his shoulder holster. "Marco, take the west corridor! Teresa, stay behind me!"
They sprinted down the dark hallway toward the guest suite, their boots making no sound against the thick carpet.
Down at the end of the corridor, a tall figure dressed in dark tactical gear stood outside Emma’s bedroom door, using a specialized electronic lock-pick to force the heavy brass handle.
"Freeze!" Marco shouted, raising his weapon as he rounded the corner.
The intruder reacted instantly, tossing a high-intensity flash canister onto the floor. A blinding white light exploded through the corridor, accompanied by a deafening bang that rattled the wall sconces.
Marco fired two rapid shots, but the intruder ducked into the service stairwell, sliding down the iron railing toward the lower basement level.
Adrian charged through the smoke, ignoring the ringing in his ears. He reached the service stairwell and leapt down the half-flight of stairs, landing heavily on the concrete basement floor.
He caught a glimpse of the intruder sprinting toward the mansion's subterranean storm drainage tunnel—an old escape route built during the Prohibition era that led off the property.
"Stop!" Adrian thundered, his voice booming down the narrow concrete tunnel.
The intruder didn't stop. He scrambled through the narrow metal hatch leading into the drainage network, slamming the heavy iron gate behind him.
By the time Marco and Adrian forced the iron gate open, the intruder had vanished into the pitch-black drainage system leading toward the river.
Lying on the damp concrete floor right beside the gate was an item the intruder had dropped during his frantic escape: a sleek, military-grade tactical earpiece glowing with a faint blue standby light.
Marco picked up the earpiece using a pair of gloved fingers. He inspected the serial number printed on the inner plastic casing.
"It’s a proprietary Falcone Communications device," Marco said, his voice cold and hard. "Dominic's private strike force."
Adrian stood tall in the dim basement, his black coat wet from the dripping pipes above. His piercing blue eyes burned with a lethal, calculating focus.
"They didn't come to kill Emma," Adrian realized softly. "They came to steal the micro-key from her bag before we could open Vault 4082."
They hurried back upstairs to the guest suite. Teresa was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding a wide-awake Emma in her lap. The six-year-old girl was trembling slightly, but she wasn't crying.
Adrian walked over and knelt beside the bed, placing a large, warm hand over Emma's small hands.
"Are you okay, little one?" Adrian asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle.
Emma looked into his piercing blue eyes and nodded slowly. "Uncle Julian told me a secret before I left," she whispered.
Adrian leaned closer. "What secret, Emma?"
May you like
"He said if I ever met you," Emma whispered, "I was supposed to tell you the word Sunburst."
Adrian froze. Sunburst was the secret code name he and Julian had given to their childhood treehouse on the grounds of Blackwood Manor—an old, abandoned DeLuca estate forty miles north of the city.
