Chapter 1 - the spilled feast

The grand dining hall of the Bellucci estate glowed with the warm, opulent light of crystal chandeliers. High-society elite, crooked judges, and senior syndicate bosses sat along a fifty-foot mahogany table draped in heavy white linen and laid with sterling silver. Standing near the VIP head table was thirty-three-year-old Clara Hayes. Dressed in a classic black-and-white maid uniform with a clean white apron and flats, she moved with quiet grace, her pale, rosy skin flushed from the heat of the kitchen as she refilled wine glasses.

Sitting at the center of the table was forty-one-year-old Celeste Bellucci, Victor’s sophisticated fiancée. Dressed in an extravagant emerald evening gown with a glittering diamond necklace and matching earrings, Celeste exuded arrogant, untouchable authority. Her cold eyes tracked Clara’s every move with quiet contempt.

As Clara leaned down to clear a side plate, Celeste deliberately reached out, grabbed a full dinner plate heaped with braised beef and rich red sauce, and dumped the entire contents straight across Clara’s white apron and black uniform.

Before Clara could recover from the shock, Celeste delivered a hard, forceful shove to Clara’s shoulder, sending the quiet maid stumbling backward away from the VIP table in front of dozens of staring, laughing guests.

Celeste glared down at her coldly. "You serve this table. You never sit at it."

Clara stood humiliated beside the stained tablecloth, her hands trembling, sauce dripping onto her flats as soft chuckles rippled through the wealthy crowd.

The heavy oak doors from the adjoining ballroom swung open. Victor Bellucci stepped into the dining hall. Broad-shouldered, muscular, and ruggedly handsome in a custom midnight-black tuxedo, the feared Mafia boss commanded instant, dead silence simply by entering the room. His dark eyes swept the hall, locking immediately onto Clara standing covered in food.

Victor's jaw set like iron. His deep voice carried a low, terrifying rumble that chilled the room. "Who did this?"

Celeste didn't flinch. She casually slid into Victor's high-backed leather chair at the head of the table, resting her manicured hands on the armrests as she gestured dismissively toward Clara.

Celeste sneered. "She forgot she was hired help."

Victor didn't say a word. He walked up to the head of the table, his polished leather shoes making no sound against the marble floor. In one swift, powerful motion, he grabbed the top of Celeste's chair and pulled it sharply backward.

The heavy chair tipped, sending Celeste tumbling off her seat and crashing onto the hardwood carpet in a flurry of emerald silk and flashing diamonds!

Before Celeste could even scream, Victor grabbed the heavy, food-covered tablecloth and ripped it off the table, sending silver platters and crystal glasses clattering as he dropped the entire filthy cloth directly across Celeste's expensive gown.

Celeste pushed herself up from the floor, soaked in wine and gravy, her hair disheveled, her face flushed with pure, unadulterated fury.

Celeste glared at him with a low threat. "Ask your father why he paid her family to disappear."

Victor froze for a fraction of a second, his expression turning terrifyingly calm. He slowly turned his head away from Celeste, his dark gaze locking onto Clara.

Clara took a quiet, steady breath. She reached into the front pocket of her stained apron and pulled out a faded, yellowed photograph.

Clara spoke quietly. "Your father called me his daughter."

Victor froze, his eyes staring at the tiny photograph in absolute, stunned silence.
