Chapter 10 - shadows on the lake

By sunset, a cool breeze began to blow off Lake Michigan, rippling the surface of the water into silver sheets under the twilight sky.

Victor stood at the end of the private pier, his dark coat snapping in the wind, looking out toward the horizon where the city lights of Chicago were beginning to twinkle.

Footsteps rustled softly on the wooden planks behind him. Clara walked up beside him, wrapped in a warm wool shawl, holding her small silver key in her hand.

"Are we going to war again, Victor?" she asked quietly, her voice carrying a mixture of fear and determination.

Victor turned his head to look at her. The rugged, battle-hardened Mafia boss reached down and took the small silver key from her palm, attaching it securely to his own gold keyring.

"No, Clara," Victor said softly, his dark eyes glowing with absolute authority. "We aren't going to war. We're going to teach them why the Bellucci name still commands respect."

In the distance, across the wide expanse of the lake, the dark silhouette of a sleek foreign yacht glided quietly toward the harbor, its navigation lights blinking softly against the darkening sky.

Clara looked at the approaching ship, then up at her brother's unyielding face.

"Whatever happens," Clara said firmly, "we face it together."

Victor offered a dark, confident smirk—the mark of a king who knew his crown was secure.

"Together," Victor agreed, locking his arm with hers as the cool evening breeze swept across the dock. "Let them come."
