Chapter 3 - the hidden ledger

The clock in the study struck 2:00 AM. Rain pattered softly against the tall arched windows, casting silver streaks across the polished wood walls.
Victor sat in his heavy leather armchair, holding the small silver key Clara had provided. Opposite him sat Marcus, his chief of security and most trusted lieutenant, holding a thick folder of financial records.
"I checked the old bank archives from thirty years ago, boss," Marcus reported in a quiet whisper. "Don Salvatore established a blind trust in Zurich under the name 'Hayes.' Five hundred thousand dollars was deposited every five years, signed off personally by your father."
Victor stared at the fire, his mind piecing together the shadow life his father had built. "He was keeping them safe. Away from the syndicate, away from my mother's family."
"There's more," Marcus added, dropping his voice even lower. "I monitored Celeste's cell phone activity after she left the study tonight. She made three encrypted calls to your cousin, Santino."
Victor’s eyes narrowed into sharp focus. Santino Bellucci was the head of the family's eastern shipping docks—an ambitious, cold man who had openly challenged Victor's leadership at the last council meeting.
"What did she tell him?" Victor asked.
"She told him the maid has proof of a second bloodline," Marcus said. "Santino told her to secure the silver key at all costs before morning."
Victor stood up slowly, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the rug. "They aren't worried about family pride. They're worried about the ledger."
Meanwhile, on the second floor of the east wing, Clara sat near the window of her small private room. She looked out at the dark gardens below, holding a small wooden rosary her mother had given her.
Suddenly, the door handle turned with a faint metallic click.
The wooden door swung open silently. A man dressed in a dark tactical jacket stepped into the room, holding a silenced pistol in his right hand. He moved toward the bed with lethal speed.
Before the intruder could reach the mattress, a massive hand reached out from the darkness beside the wardrobe, grabbing the assassin's throat with crushing strength!
Victor shoved the man hard against the stone wall, disarming him in a single fluid motion. The silenced pistol clattered onto the rug.
Victor leaned in close to the attacker's ear, his voice a lethal whisper. "Santino sent you to my house?"

The assassin choked for air, unable to speak as Victor’s grip tightened like a vice.
Clara stood up from her chair by the window, completely calm. "He wasn't looking for me, Victor. He was looking for the wall panel behind the bookshelf."
