Chapter 8 - the clean ledger

Three weeks later, the morning sun broke bright and clear over Lake Michigan, painting the calm water in brilliant gold and blue hues.

The Bellucci estate had been transformed. The dark, secretive atmosphere that had hung over the property for years was gone, replaced by open windows, fresh lake air, and the hum of new beginnings.

In the sunlit garden behind the main house, Clara sat at a white wrought-iron table under the shade of a flourishing oak tree. She wore a simple yellow summer dress, her brown hair tied back in a soft ribbon. Spread out before her were blueprint designs for the new Clara Bellucci Children's Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charitable organization funded directly by Don Salvatore's private Zurich trust.

Victor walked out onto the lawn, carrying two cups of fresh espresso. He wore a dark blue linen shirt with the sleeves unbuttoned at his wrists, his heavy gold signet ring catching the light.

He set a cup down beside her and took a seat across the table.

"You look comfortable out here, Clara," Victor said, a rare, genuine smile touching his rugged features.

"It's peaceful," Clara replied, sipping her coffee as she looked at the blueprints. "For thirty years, my mother lived in fear that your family would find us. Now... I feel like I finally belong somewhere."

Victor reached out, placing his large hand over hers. "You belong here. This is your house as much as it is mine."

"And the syndicate?" Clara asked quietly. "Are the captains accepting the new structure?"

"Santino's faction has been completely dismantled," Victor explained softly. "The eastern docks are under Marcus's control now. The family is cleaner than it has been in forty years."

Clara smiled warmly, leaning back in her chair. "Our father would be proud of you, Victor."

"He would be proud of both of us," Victor said softly.

Suddenly, Marcus walked across the lawn toward them, holding a thick, black leather envelope stamped with an unfamiliar red wax emblem—a crown surrounded by three crossed daggers.

Marcus's expression was grave. "Boss. A courier just brought this from the airport. It came directly from Sicily."
