Chapter 4 - the secret beneath the wine cellar

Ten minutes later, Victor, Clara, and Marcus stood deep beneath the estate in the ancient brick wine cellar. High arched ceilings held centuries of dust, and the air smelled of damp stone and aged oak barrels.
Clara walked past rows of dusty wine bottles toward the far stone wall behind a heavy oak rack. She reached into a small crevice between two granite blocks and inserted the small silver key.
Clack.
A heavy section of the brick wall swung inward, revealing a narrow spiral staircase leading down into total darkness.
Marcus clicked on a heavy tactical flashlight, illuminating the narrow stone steps. "Don Salvatore built this during the prohibition era. Not even the senior captains knew this tunnel existed."
They descended thirty feet below the cellar floor into a small, climate-controlled vault constructed of reinforced steel and granite. In the center of the room sat a solid iron safe stamped with the Bellucci family crest.
Victor stepped up to the safe. "The combination?"
"My birthdate," Clara said softly. "October fourteenth."
Victor turned the iron dial—10, 14, 83.
The heavy iron door clicked open.
Inside lay three thick, leather-bound notebooks and an official parchment document bearing a gold wax seal. Victor pulled out the parchment and unfolded it carefully under the flashlight beam.
It was an official, legal marriage certificate registered in Nevada thirty-one years ago—bearing Don Salvatore's signature alongside Clara's mother, Clara Senior.
Victor's breath caught in his throat. Under Nevada state law and traditional Sicilian family charter, a prior legal marriage meant Salvatore's subsequent marriage to Victor's mother was legally void in the eyes of the old family laws.
"She wasn't his mistress," Victor whispered, looking at Clara with newfound awe. "She was his first legal wife."
Clara looked into her brother's eyes. "Which means under the 1912 Family Charter... I hold fifty percent of the Bellucci territories. And Santino knows it."
Suddenly, the steel door at the top of the spiral stairs slammed shut with a deafening bang!

A harsh electronic voice filtered through the intercom speaker on the vault wall—Celeste's voice, cold and triumphant.
"Thank you for finding the vault for us, Victor," Celeste sneered over the speaker. "Santino’s men are setting the charges on the cellar roof right now. Enjoy your father's legacy in the dark."
