Chapter 1 - the crimson glass

The grand ballroom of the Varelli manor burned with the warm, opulent glow of massive crystal chandeliers. High-society elite, crooked politicians, and powerful syndicate bosses moved across the polished marble floor in tailored suits and silk gowns. Standing near the center of the room, looking over his empire with frightening calm, was Dominic Varelli. Broad-shouldered, battle-hardened, and impeccably dressed in a custom black tuxedo, his presence alone commanded instant, breathless silence whenever he turned his gaze.
Near the champagne pyramid at the edge of the terrace, thirty-one-year-old Elena Brooks moved with quiet grace. Dressed in a classic black-and-white maid uniform with a neat white apron and flats, she kept her head low, quietly clearing crystal glasses from the high cocktail tables. Her face was soft and beautiful, but her eyes held a guarded, unspoken sorrow.
Stepping into her path was Vivienne Varelli, Dominic’s glamorous thirty-nine-year-old sister-in-law. Dressed in a breathtaking crimson evening gown that clung to her curves, Vivienne’s diamond earrings flashed under the chandelier lights. She held a full glass of bubbly champagne, her eyes fixed on Elena with pure, unprovoked viciousness.
Without warning, Vivienne lifted her glass and casually poured the entire contents directly over Elena’s head.
The sticky, sparkling liquid soaked through Elena’s soft brown hair and ran down her pale face, dampening her clean white collar. Before Elena could even react, Vivienne struck out with her manicured hand, knocking the silver serving tray from Elena's fingers. The remaining crystal glasses crashed onto the marble floor, shattering into dozens of glittering shards around her flats.
Vivienne pointed her long, diamond-ringed finger toward the floor, her red lips curving into a cruel smirk.
Vivienne: “Kneel. Clean what servants spill.”
Gasps rippled softly through the surrounding crowd of wealthy guests. Elena stood frozen for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening, before she slowly lowered herself to her knees among the sharp glass, her hands trembling as she began picking up the broken stems.
A heavy, deliberate step echoed from the grand arched doorway.
Dominic entered the ballroom. His dark eyes swept the room and instantly locked onto the scene. He saw Elena on her knees on the cold stone floor while half a dozen billionaires watched in hushed amusement.
Vivienne didn't notice Dominic approaching behind her. She casually picked up another fresh glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray and took a slow sip, looking down at Elena with arrogant amusement.
Vivienne: “She should be grateful she’s allowed inside.”
A massive hand reached over Vivienne’s shoulder, plucking the crystal glass directly from her fingers.
Vivienne spun around in surprise, her eyes widening as she met Dominic’s ice-cold stare. Before she could utter a single word, Dominic tilted the glass and poured the dark champagne directly down the front of her expensive crimson gown, ruining the silk in a single, silent gesture.
Then, with lightning speed, Dominic delivered one powerful open-handed slap across Vivienne’s cheek.
The crack echoed through the cavernous ballroom like a gunshot. Vivienne spun sideways from the force of the blow, her high heels catching on her dress hem as she crashed heavily into a padded banquet chair, sending it sliding across the floor.
The entire room went completely dead silent. Not a single guest dared to breathe.
Vivienne pushed herself up from the chair, her face flushed red, her hair disheveled, and her gown soaked. Her eyes burned with pure, venomous rage as she glared at her brother-in-law.
Vivienne: “Defend her again, and I expose her real name.”
Dominic stood tall, his broad chest rising and falling as he looked down at his sister-in-law with unyielding authority.
Below them on the floor, Elena stayed on her knees. Slowly, methodically, she unbuttoned the wrist of her left black cloth glove. She pulled the fabric back inch by inch, revealing a small, ancient signet ring worn on her ring finger—a heavy band of black gold carved with a distinct, intricate crest.
Dominic’s eyes dropped to her hand. His breath caught in his throat as his hardened expression shattered into visible shock.

Dominic: “Why does my family crest belong to you?”
Vivienne looked down at Elena's exposed hand. The color instantly drained from Vivienne’s face, her mouth opening in silent, panic-stricken horror.
