Chapter 7 - the council's verdict

The grand oak council chamber on the second floor of the Lake Shore mansion was filled with twenty elderly men dressed in formal dark suits—the senior bosses of the five Varelli family branches across the Midwest.

At the head of the long marble table sat Dominic, his posture tall, dark, and unshakeable. To his right sat Elena, dressed in a sophisticated navy wool dress, her dark hair pinned back neatly, the black gold crest ring shining on her finger.

Kneeling on the cold stone floor at the foot of the table, stripped of her jewelry and wearing a simple gray detention jumpsuit, was Vivienne. Two armed guards stood behind her, their hands resting on their holsters.

An elderly council member with white hair and a thick silver mustache, Don Carmine, leaned forward, reviewing the ledger documents laid before him.

"The evidence is absolute," Carmine announced, his raspy voice echoing through the silent room. "Vivienne Varelli conspired with our sworn enemies, the Valenti syndicate, to execute an internal takeover and liquidate family assets."

Carmine looked down at Vivienne with cold disdain. "Under article nine of the 1898 charter, your name is stricken from the ledger. Your wealth, your property, and your status are forfeited to the founding trust."

Vivienne didn't speak. She kept her head lowered, tears dripping silently onto the cold marble floor, her arrogance utterly extinguished.

Carmine then turned his gaze toward Elena, his eyes softening with deep, ancient respect. "And to you, Elena Brooks... daughter of Julian Varelli... this council recognizes your blood. You are the legitimate heir to thirty percent of the Varelli holdings."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the gathered bosses.

Elena stood up slowly, her voice calm and clear as she addressed the room. "Thank you, Don Carmine. But I do not wish to run a syndicate. I ask only that my father's name be cleared, my mother's memory be honored, and the Varelli trust be placed into a clean foundation to help victims of organized crime."

The bosses stared at her in stunned silence. Never in the hundred-year history of the family had an heir walked away from such vast wealth and power.

Dominic looked up at her, a rare, genuine spark of pride flashing in his dark eyes.

"The request is granted," Carmine declared, striking a wooden gavel against the table. "The trust is transferred."
