Chapter 3 - the viper's whisper

By 2:00 AM, the mansion had emptied, leaving only the quiet patter of rain against the high arched windows of the study.
Dominic sat in his high-backed leather chair, staring at the yellowed paper Elena had left behind. It was a birth certificate registered in a small parish in upstate New York, bearing Julian Varelli's official signature alongside Clara's. Elena wasn't just a distant relative—she was the sole legitimate heir to the Varelli founding trust, a fund worth hundreds of millions that had been controlled by Vivienne since her husband’s death five years ago.
A soft knock sounded at the door. Julian's former lieutenant and Dominic's current head of security, Marcus, stepped inside.
"Boss," Marcus said, keeping his hands folded behind his back. "I searched Vivienne's private quarters in the east wing as you requested."
Dominic didn't look up from the document. "What did you find?"
"A series of encrypted satellite calls made over the last forty-eight hours," Marcus reported smoothly. "All of them directed to the Valenti family in New York. And one wire transfer sent this afternoon to an untraceable offshore account in Zurich."
Dominic set the paper down, his jaw setting like iron. The Valenti family were the Varellis' fiercest rivals—a ruthless syndicate that Dominic had spent ten years driving out of the city.
"Vivienne is selling family assets," Dominic said, his deep voice dropping into an icy register. "She knows Elena's existence invalidates her claim to the trust."
"Should I have her removed from the property, boss?" Marcus asked.
"No," Dominic replied, rising from his chair. "If we kick her out now, she runs straight to the Valentis with our internal security codes. Keep two men on her at all times. She doesn't take a breath in this house without my permission."
"And the girl?" Marcus asked. "Elena?"
"Move her out of the servant quarters immediately," Dominic ordered. "Put her in the master suite on the third floor. Assign four armed guards to her door."
Meanwhile, in the dimly lit guest room of the east wing, Vivienne stood near her balcony doors, holding a secure satellite phone to her ear. Her hand was shaking, her crimson dress replaced by a dark silk robe.
"He knows," Vivienne hissed into the receiver, her voice trembling with desperation. "He saw the ring. He has the birth certificate."
A gravelly voice answered through the speaker. "Did you secure the ledger from the study safe?"
"No! Dominic hit me in front of everyone! He has the maid locked in the upper rooms!" Vivienne gasped. "If she talks to the council, I lose everything! My accounts will be frozen by tomorrow morning!"

"Calm down, Vivienne," the voice replied calmly. "The girl won't make it to the council meeting. My team is already in the city. We strike the mansion at dawn."
Vivienne closed her eyes, a wicked, desperate smile slowly returning to her face. "Make sure you kill the maid first," she whispered into the dark. "And leave the crest ring on her finger."
