Chapter 10 - the new morning

Three weeks later, the morning sun shone bright and warm over the manicured gardens of the Varelli estate. The scars of the battle had been completely erased—fresh white marble steps had been installed, new glass windows sparkled in the sunlight, and the fountain in the courtyard bubbled merrily with clear water.
In the rose garden behind the main house, a small granite monument had been erected under the shade of a large oak tree. Carved into the stone were two names: Julian & Clara Varelli — Reunited in Light.
Elena stood before the monument, dressed in a simple, elegant cream silk dress. She held a bouquet of fresh white roses, gently laying them at the base of the stone. Her face was serene, the heavy shadow of fear that had followed her whole life finally lifted.
Footsteps rustled softly on the grass behind her.
Dominic walked up beside her, wearing a dark blue linen suit with the sleeves unbuttoned at the wrists. He carried two small silver cups of fresh espresso. He handed one to Elena with a soft, respectful nod.
"They would be proud of you, Elena," Dominic said, looking down at the carved names on the granite. "You gave them the justice they were denied."
Elena took a sip of the warm espresso, looking out at the calm, blue waters of the lake stretching to the horizon. "I couldn't have done it without you, Dominic. You protected me when everyone else wanted me dead."
"You're family," Dominic replied simple and deep. "It's what we do."
Elena reached into her small purse and pulled out the ancient black gold crest ring. She took Dominic's large hand and placed the ring into his palm.
"Keep it," Elena said softly. "It belongs to the protector of this house."
Dominic looked down at the heavy gold ring resting in his hand, feeling the profound weight of his family's legacy finally made clean. He closed his fingers around it, slipping it onto his pinky finger alongside his own signet ring.
"What will you do now, Elena?" Dominic asked gently.
"I'm going to New York next week," Elena smiled warmly. "To open the Clara Varelli Foundation. We've already secured three buildings for women needing shelter."
Dominic offered a small, rare smile—a genuine look of contentment touching his rugged features. "If you ever need anything... a guard, a lawyer, or an uncle to slap someone... you call me."
Elena laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that echoed through the quiet garden. "I will."
Suddenly, Marcus walked down the stone path carrying a thick, wax-sealed envelope made of heavy crimson parchment.
"Boss," Marcus said, his face unusually grave. "A messenger just brought this from the airport. It's from the High Syndicate Council in Rome."
Dominic took the envelope, breaking the heavy wax seal. He pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment written in fine, elegant Italian calligraphy.
He read the first two lines, his smile slowly fading into a dark, razor-sharp focus.
Dominic Varelli: The blood debt of Julian Varelli is paid in Chicago. But his secret son in Sicily has just laid claim to the European throne.
Elena looked at Dominic, noticing the sudden shift in his posture. "Dominic? What is it?"
May you like
Dominic slowly folded the crimson parchment and tucked it into his jacket pocket. He looked out over the sparkling lake, the familiar, dark fire igniting deep within his eyes once more.
"It seems your father had more secrets than we thought, Elena," Dominic whispered softly into the warm summer breeze. "Get your coat. We're going to Sicily."
