Chapter 1 - the toy train

The heavy brass doors of the ultra-luxurious Manhattan penthouse glided open with a soft, expensive hum. Elara stepped inside, her sensible black flats sinking into the plush cream rug that lined the entryway. She was in her mid-twenties, her brunette hair pinned back into a neat, flawless low bun, wearing a crisp navy-blue nanny dress complete with a white apron and a delicate white lace headband. She had been hired less than an hour ago through an elite, highly secretive agency.

As she walked onto the pristine, polished marble floors of the grand living room, she passed the previous nanny. The woman was in her early thirties, dragging a suitcase toward the service elevator. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow, and three distinct red scratches marked her cheek. She didn't look at Elara. She just kept her eyes on the floor, looking entirely frightened and shaken, desperate to escape the gilded cage of the Duca family.

Elara walked further into the massive living room. The space was breathtaking, decorated in cream and gold, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a cinematic, dizzying view of the Manhattan skyline. Warm daylight poured through the glass, reflecting off the crystal chandelier hanging above an arrangement of fresh white orchids.

But the beauty of the room was instantly shattered.

Before Elara could even introduce herself, a heavy wooden toy train flew through the air. It slammed hard into her shoulder and crashed to the marble floor, splintering into three pieces.

Elara didn't flinch. She slowly lowered her gaze.

Standing a few feet away was Leah Duca. She was three years old, a tiny, furious force of nature. Her curly light-brown hair was tied back with a dark red bow, and she wore a rich burgundy lace dress, crisp white socks, and red patent leather shoes. In her left hand, she gripped a small, cream-colored teddy bear so tightly her knuckles were white. Her right fist was raised in the air, trembling with absolute, unfiltered rage. She looked incredibly emotionally fragile, a child drowning in an ocean of anger.

"Go away!" Leah screamed, her small voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Standing in the background, near the towering windows, was her father. Matteo Duca was a man who radiated a controlled, terrifying power. In his late thirties, he was devastatingly handsome, possessing dark wavy hair and a strong, sharp jawline. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the collar unbuttoned, revealing the faint, dark ink of chest tattoos that hinted at a violent past. Tailored blue trousers and a luxury wristwatch completed the look of a billionaire who was accustomed to absolute obedience. He stood completely tense, watching the scene unfold, his expression emotionally guarded. He was waiting to see if Elara would run like the others.

Leah stormed forward, her red patent shoes stomping on the marble. She stopped mere inches from Elara’s face, her tiny fist trembling in the air, her chest heaving with furious breaths.

Instead of stepping back, instead of scolding the child or looking to the billionaire for help, Elara slowly knelt down. Her navy-blue dress pooled around her knees on the cold marble. She brought herself exactly to Leah’s eye level. She didn't reach out. She just looked directly into the little girl's eyes with a calm, unwavering compassion.

"That is a very big feeling," Elara said, her voice soft, steady, and entirely devoid of judgment.

Leah blinked. The sheer, unexpected gentleness in the nanny's American accent seemed to disrupt the child's entire world. Her angry, furious expression wavered. Slowly, her trembling fist lowered to her side.

Then, something shifted in the room. The air seemed to grow cold. Leah’s wide eyes darted away from Elara and looked toward the dark, shadowed expanse of the service hallway.

The rage in the three-year-old's face vanished entirely, replaced by a raw, suffocating fear. She quickly backed up, closing the distance until she was pressing her small body against Elara’s side, seeking protection from a stranger she had just thrown a toy at.

"No," Leah whispered, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the penthouse air conditioning.

Elara gently leaned in, keeping her posture completely calm so as not to startle the child. In the background, Matteo straightened immediately. The guarded stillness of the billionaire vanished, his entire body going rigid as he sensed the sudden shift in his daughter's demeanor.

"No what, sweetheart?" Elara asked quietly.

Leah stared down the long, empty hallway. Her tiny body was trembling violently now. She looked back at Elara, her eyes wide with terror, and then she looked past the nanny, directly at her father. Her voice was small and shaking, carrying a weight that no child should ever bear.

"No blue room," Leah whispered.

Matteo’s face turned deathly still.
