Chapter 8 - the siege

Inside the blue room, Camilla stared at the intercom speaker, her face pale with fury. She slammed her hand against the biometric scanner, but it blinked red. It needed Leah’s eyes, not hers.
"You think this is over, Matteo?" Camilla’s voice crackled through the speaker, dripping with venom. "I am not the only one who came tonight. I didn't come alone."
Matteo’s blood ran cold.
Suddenly, the massive floor-to-ceiling windows in the grand living room exploded inward.
The sound was deafening. Shards of safety glass rained down on the cream-and-gold furniture as a dozen heavily armed mercenaries repelled into the penthouse from the roof. Camilla had hired an elite extraction team.
"Elara, run!" Matteo roared, raising his weapon and firing into the living room to provide cover fire.
Elara didn't hesitate. She turned and sprinted down the corridor, holding Leah incredibly tight. She ran toward the grand staircase, dodging the crossfire as Matteo engaged the mercenaries with brutal, lethal precision. There was no graphic blood, but the cinematic violence was intense—a symphony of shattered marble and splintering wood as the billionaire fought to protect his family.
Elara reached the bottom of the stairs, sliding behind a massive marble pillar as bullets tore into the drywall above her head. Leah was crying, terrified by the noise. Elara pressed the child's face into her shoulder, shielding her completely.
"I've got you, I've got you," Elara whispered frantically, her own heart hammering against her ribs.
Matteo was pinned down near the hallway, vastly outnumbered. The mercenaries were advancing systematically, moving with military precision. They weren't just thugs; they were professionals.
Elara looked around the dark living room. She needed a distraction. She needed to give Matteo an opening.
She noticed the main electrical breaker panel discreetly hidden behind a decorative gold grate near the pillar. Elara set Leah down, pulling her behind a heavy velvet armchair. "Stay exactly here, sweetheart. Do not move."
Elara crawled on her stomach across the marble floor, avoiding the sweeping flashlight beams of the advancing mercenaries. She reached the grate, prying it open with bleeding fingers. She found the main power relay switch.
With a deep breath, Elara ripped the heavy copper wiring out of the relay panel.
Sparks showered across the floor, and the emergency backup lights instantly short-circuited. The entire penthouse plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
The mercenaries yelled in confusion, their night vision goggles momentarily blinded by the sparks.
Matteo didn't need light. He knew every inch of his home. He moved through the darkness like a ghost, taking down three mercenaries in rapid, silent succession using brutal hand-to-hand combat. The tide of the battle shifted instantly in the darkness.
Elara scrambled back to the armchair, grabbing Leah and pulling her close. She could hear the heavy thuds of bodies hitting the floor, the grunts of pain, and the terrifying silence of Matteo hunting in the dark.
Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the darkness, illuminating the velvet armchair.
A mercenary stood ten feet away, his weapon raised, aiming directly at Elara and Leah.
Elara shielded the child with her own body, bracing for the impact, her eyes squeezing shut.
A heavy, sickening crunch echoed through the room.
Elara opened her eyes. The mercenary crumpled to the floor. Standing behind him, illuminated by the dropped flashlight, was Matteo. He was breathing heavily, his white shirt ruined, his face covered in sweat, but his dark eyes were fixed on Elara with a fierce, protective fire.
"We need to go," Matteo commanded, reaching down to grab Elara’s hand, pulling her to her feet.
But as they turned toward the private elevator, the heavy steel doors slid open. The emergency power had reset the circuits. The lights flickered back on.
Standing in the elevator, holding an override key and a suppressed weapon, was Camilla. Her mercenaries had blown the secondary hatch to the vault while Matteo was fighting in the living room.

She stepped out into the ruined penthouse, aiming her weapon directly at Matteo’s chest.
"Did you really think a steel door could hold me?" Camilla smiled, a beautiful, terrifying sight. "Give me the child, Matteo. Or you both die right here."
