Chapter 5 - the shattered glass

The tension in the penthouse was suffocating. Following the dinner party, Matteo ordered the security detail doubled, though he knew the true threat was already inside the walls.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. Matteo had unexpectedly returned to the penthouse early, shedding his suit jacket and rolling up the sleeves of his white dress shirt. He found Elara in the living room, sitting on the marble floor with Leah, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks.
Matteo stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching them. The sunlight caught the dark ink of the tattoos on his forearms. He looked exhausted, the weight of his empire and his secrets pulling at his strong jawline.
Elara looked up, sensing his gaze. She offered a small, gentle smile. "She is doing much better today. No tantrums. She even ate all her vegetables."
Matteo walked over, his heavy footsteps silent on the rug. To Elara's surprise, the intimidating billionaire slowly lowered his large frame onto the floor, sitting cross-legged next to the block castle. Leah looked at him, her eyes wide, before hesitantly holding out a blue wooden block.
Matteo took it, his massive hand dwarfing the tiny toy. He placed it carefully on top of a tower.
For a long moment, the three of them sat in peace. It was a fragile, beautiful domestic illusion. Elara looked at Matteo, seeing the profound, desperate love he held for his daughter, buried deep beneath his emotional armor. He caught her staring, and the intensity in his dark eyes made Elara’s breath catch. There was a spark between them, a quiet, undeniable connection forged in the crucible of this dangerous household.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the living room swung open. Mrs. Gable marched in, flanked by two burly men in suits Elara didn't recognize.
"Mr. Duca," Mrs. Gable said sharply, her tone entirely lacking its usual deference. "It is time for Leah’s scheduled evaluation."
Matteo stood up instantly, his entire body radiating lethal violence. "I canceled those evaluations, Martha. Get out of my living room."
"I am afraid that is not your decision to make," Mrs. Gable sneered. "The family trust requires it. Take the child."
The two men stepped forward.
Elara didn't think; she reacted. She scooped Leah into her arms in a heartbeat, backing away from the men.
Matteo moved with blinding speed. He grabbed the nearest man by the lapels of his suit and drove him violently backward. The man crashed into a pedestal, sending a massive, priceless crystal vase shattering into a thousand pieces across the marble floor.
"Do not touch my daughter!" Matteo roared, delivering a brutal, calculated strike to the second man's throat, dropping him to his knees.
Mrs. Gable took a step back, her severe face pale with shock. She hadn't expected Matteo to resort to physical violence in front of the child.
"Take her to my office, Elara!" Matteo commanded over the chaos. "Lock the door!"
Elara turned and ran. Her sensible flats slipped slightly on the polished marble, but she kept her balance, holding Leah tight against her chest. She sprinted down the private corridor and burst into Matteo’s massive, oak-paneled office, slamming the heavy doors shut and throwing the deadbolts.
Leah was crying silently, her tiny hands gripping Elara’s navy-blue collar. Elara carried her to the leather sofa, holding her close, rocking her gently and whispering calming words until the little girl's breathing evened out.
Once Leah was calm, Elara stood up to pace the room, adrenaline still coursing through her veins. As she walked past Matteo’s massive mahogany desk, she noticed a set of architectural blueprints unrolled across the surface.
She leaned closer. It was a schematic of the penthouse.
Her eyes immediately darted to the service wing. She found the hallway. She found the steel door. But the blueprint didn't label it as a room.

It was labeled as a high-security biometric vault.
Elara stared at the intricate diagrams of steel reinforcements, independent ventilation systems, and Faraday cage shielding. The blue room wasn't just a place to punish a child. It was a fortress. It was a vault designed to hold something incredibly valuable. And if Camilla was sneaking into it, she wasn't just terrorizing Leah. She was using the psychological torment as a smokescreen to systematically rob Matteo blind.
