Chapter 6 - the descent

The revelation hit Elara like a physical blow. She understood now why the previous nannies were driven away. They hadn't just witnessed abuse; they had inadvertently stumbled upon a heist in progress.
The heavy doors to the office clicked, and Matteo unlocked them from the outside. He stepped in, his white shirt slightly torn, his knuckles bruised. He locked the doors behind him and leaned against the wood, letting out a long, ragged exhale.
"Are you hurt?" Matteo asked, his dark eyes instantly sweeping over Elara and Leah.
"We are fine," Elara said, stepping away from the desk. "The men?"
"Removed," Matteo stated coldly. "Mrs. Gable has been locked in the holding cells in the basement. She won't be communicating with Camilla anytime soon."
Elara looked at the blueprints on the desk, then back at Matteo. "It's a vault. The blue room is a vault."
Matteo walked slowly to the desk, his strong jawline tight. He looked down at the blueprints. "Yes. It contains the hard drives that hold the cryptocurrency keys for the entire syndicate. Billions of dollars. Untraceable."
"And Camilla is trying to steal them," Elara said, the pieces finally snapping together. "She uses Leah’s fear of the room as a distraction. If the child screams every time someone goes near the hallway, no one investigates the noise inside."
Matteo nodded slowly, looking at Elara with a mixture of awe and heavy sorrow. "I didn't build the vault, Elara. She did. Before she faked her death, Camilla oversaw the renovation of this penthouse. She designed the blue room. She installed the biometric locks. And she programmed them so that they only open to a very specific genetic marker."
Elara’s breath hitched. She looked over at the leather sofa, where three-year-old Leah was curled up, holding her teddy bear.
"The vault doesn't open for Camilla," Matteo whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying realization. "It opens for Leah."
The horror of the situation crashed over Elara. Camilla wasn't just terrifying her daughter; she was actively conditioning the child to obey her, to follow her into the dark, so she could use the little girl's biometric signature to open the vault. The red ribbon left by the door wasn't a threat. It was a lure.
"We have to move her," Elara said fiercely. "We have to get Leah out of this penthouse tonight."
"We can't," Matteo replied, running a hand over his face. "The syndicate elders have the building surrounded. After the incident at the dinner party, they suspect I am losing control of my own house. If I try to run with the child, they will assume I am stealing the funds for myself. They will kill us all."
Elara stepped closer to Matteo, entirely disregarding the boundaries between billionaire and nanny. She placed her hand firmly on his arm. His muscles were tense as steel under her touch, but he didn't pull away. He looked down at her hand, then up into her calm, steady eyes.
"Then we don't run," Elara said, her voice filled with a quiet, absolute resolve. "We end it. We let Camilla come for the vault. And we trap her inside."
Matteo stared at her. The beautiful, gentle woman in the navy-blue dress was suggesting a tactical ambush against one of the most dangerous women in the criminal underworld.
"It is too dangerous for you, Elara," Matteo said softly, his hand coming up to cover hers. "I will not risk your life."
"My life is already at risk," Elara replied without hesitation. "And I promised Leah I would keep her safe. I don't break my promises."

Matteo looked deeply into her eyes, the emotional walls completely falling away. In the quiet safety of his office, the intimidating mafia boss leaned down and pressed his forehead against hers, a gesture of profound, desperate trust.
"Okay," Matteo whispered. "We end it tonight."
