Chapter 9 - the mother's return

The penthouse was entirely ruined, a battleground of shattered glass, broken marble, and unconscious mercenaries. The warm daylight of the past was gone, replaced by the harsh, flickering emergency strobe lights.
Camilla stood near the elevator, elegant and terrifying in her tactical black gear. She kept her weapon perfectly steady, aimed at Matteo’s heart.
Matteo stood in front of Elara and Leah, his broad shoulders shielding them completely. His weapon was out of ammunition, hanging uselessly at his side. He didn't flinch. He looked at the woman he had once loved, the woman who had turned his life into a nightmare.
"You don't want the child, Camilla," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You want the cryptocurrency keys. The servers are in the vault. Take them and leave."
"I can't take them without her eyes, Matteo," Camilla sneered, her mask of civility completely gone. "The biometric lock is hardwired to the drives. If I rip them out, the drives wipe themselves. I need Leah."
Camilla’s eyes shifted to Elara, narrowing with disgust. "And who is this? Another one of your pathetic little nannies? Step aside, girl, before I put a bullet in your pretty face."
Elara didn't move. She held Leah tighter, her soft brunette features set in absolute, unyielding defiance. "You are a monster," Elara said, her American accent ringing clear and steady over the sirens wailing far below on the Manhattan streets. "You don't deserve this little girl."
Camilla laughed, a sharp, cruel sound. She lowered her weapon slightly, looking at Leah. "Leah, darling. It’s Mommy. Come to Mommy. We are going to go on a trip. Just you and me."
Leah peeked out from behind Elara’s legs. She looked at the woman who had terrorized her, the woman who had locked her in the blue room to condition her. The tiny, three-year-old girl, wearing her ruined burgundy lace dress, was trembling violently.
But she didn't walk toward Camilla.
Leah reached up and grabbed Elara’s hand, her tiny fingers clutching the nanny desperately.
"No," Leah whispered, her voice surprisingly strong. "You're bad."
Camilla’s face twisted into an ugly, furious scowl. The rejection from her own biological daughter, choosing a stranger over her, shattered her elegant composure. She raised her weapon, aiming it directly at Elara’s head.
"Fine," Camilla spat. "I'll peel her off your dead body."
"Camilla, stop!" Matteo roared, stepping forward, placing his chest directly in front of the barrel. "The keys are gone!"
Camilla froze, her finger on the trigger. "What?"
Matteo’s strong jawline tightened into a smirk of absolute triumph. "You think I didn't know you programmed the vault to her retinas? You think I just sat here for three years waiting for you to come back?"
Matteo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy black flash drive. He held it up in the flickering light.
"I hired the best hackers in the world to bypass your biometrics," Matteo said softly. "It took them two years. They finished last week. I downloaded the entire syndicate treasury onto this drive, and I wiped the servers in the blue room clean. There is nothing left in that vault but empty hard drives."
Camilla stared at the small black drive, her eyes wide with horror. Her entire plan, her years of faking her death, the psychological torture of her child—it was all for nothing.
"Give it to me," Camilla demanded, her voice shaking with rage, taking a step toward Matteo.
"You want it?" Matteo asked coldly.
With a flick of his wrist, Matteo threw the black flash drive over Camilla’s head, straight out the shattered floor-to-ceiling windows, into the dark, rainy abyss of the Manhattan night.
"No!" Camilla screamed, dropping her weapon and lunging toward the window, her greedy, desperate instincts overpowering her tactical training.
As she leaned over the edge of the shattered glass, desperately trying to see where the drive fell, a massive, deafening whirring sound rose from the darkness outside.

A heavily armored SWAT helicopter ascended into view, hovering directly outside the penthouse windows, its blinding searchlight snapping on, illuminating Camilla in a blinding beam of white light.
"FBI! Drop your weapons and step away from the ledge!" a voice boomed over a loudspeaker.
