Chapter 1 - The Last Delivery

The late afternoon sun hung low over the industrial outskirts of the city, casting long, amber shadows across the cracked pavement. Twelve-year-old Renley Hart adjusted the strap of her oversized cloth bag, her thin shoulders straining under the weight of the warm food containers packed inside. Her worn yellow floral dress was dusted with dirt at the hem, and her scuffed shoes rattled against the pedals of her rusted bicycle as she navigated the quiet streets.

As she pedaled, a sudden memory brushed through her mind. She pictured seventy-two-year-old Walter Pike sitting in his faded cardigan beside the high window of his tiny third-floor apartment. He had been frail, gentle, and utterly alone, looking out at the skyline with quiet, patient eyes whenever she brought him his afternoon soup from the community kitchen. He had been her favorite delivery—the only person in the ward who always asked about her day and offered her a crisp silver quarter.

Renley blinked back a sting of tears, shaking the memory away. She pushed harder on the pedals, steering toward the affluent residential district on the hill for one final, strange delivery that had been placed on her clipboard earlier that morning.

Ten minutes later, the cracked asphalt gave way to pristine cobblestone. Renley pulled her bicycle to a halt in front of a towering stone estate surrounded by massive black iron gates. Standing on the manicured lawn just inside the gate were two broad-shouldered men in dark suits, their eyes sharp and vigilant.

As Renley stepped off her bike, the two guards stepped directly in front of the iron bars, blocking her path with cold, unyielding expressions.

Renley nervously held up the faded cloth bag resting in her bicycle basket. "I have a meal delivery."

The lead guard scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. "You're at the wrong house, kid. Clear out before we call security."

Renley straightened her spine, pulling her bag closer. "But someone ordered food."

Before the guard could reply, the heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion swung open.

Damian Moretti stepped onto the grand stone entrance. At forty-three years old, Damian commanded the property with terrifying silence. He wore a fitted black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled slightly, exposing dark, intricate tattoos along his muscular forearms. His sharp features and cold, controlled demeanor immediately silenced the two guards, who snapped to attention and lowered their eyes.

Damian walked down the stone steps with slow, deliberate authority, his polished black shoes making no sound against the marble. He approached the iron gate, looking down at the thin girl in her yellow floral dress with indifferent detachment.

"Give it here," Damian said, reaching through the iron bars to take the delivery bag, intending to dismiss her.

As his hand closed around the handles, his dark eyes caught the faded paper label taped to the front of the bag. A thick black line had been drawn through the printed name, but beneath the ink, the original text was still clearly legible.

Walter Pike.

Damian froze. The color instantly drained from his sharp face, his breath locking in his chest. His intense, controlled composure shattered in a single fraction of a second.

He grabbed the cloth bag with a fierce, trembling grip, pulling it against the iron bars as his eyes locked onto Renley with raw shock.

"Where did you get this?" Damian demanded, his deep voice thick with a sudden, suffocating intensity.

Renley flinched slightly, but her honest brown eyes held his gaze. "From the community kitchen roster. Mr. Walter was one of my regulars... but he passed away three days ago. I found this last ticket in his file."

The two guards exchanged tense, panicked looks behind their boss.

Damian’s hand loosened on the bag. He slowly lowered himself onto the cold stone steps of his mansion, his knees buckling slightly as he clutched the faded bag against his broad chest. For the first time in his life, the feared mob boss looked completely broken, tears welling in his dark eyes as he stared at the crossed-out name.

Renley stood motionless on the pavement, confused and deeply worried by the terrifying man's sudden collapse.

Damian slowly lifted his head, looking up at Renley through his tears. His voice dropped into a hushed, trembling whisper that made the hair on her arms stand on end.

"Walter Pike wasn’t who you thought he was."

Behind Renley, Victor Kane—Damian’s head guard, an intimidating man with an earpiece and a cold dark suit—stepped forward. Victor reached over the iron gate, grabbed the heavy iron lock, and clicked it firmly shut.

Clack.

Renley turned slightly at the sound of the heavy metal latch. She looked back at the towering gates, then at Damian sitting shattered on the steps, realizing with a sudden spike of panic that she was now trapped inside the estate.
