Chapter 9 - The Truth Unsealed

"Federal warrant!" a lead officer bellowed, flashlight beams cutting through the dark kitchen as eight armed officers pointed their weapons toward the rear pantry doorway. "Drop your weapons and step away from the child!"
Standing right behind the officers was Judge Thomas Vance—a arrogant sixty-year-old man in a tailored dark coat, holding a rolled legal injunction in his gloved hand.
"Hand her over, Damian!" Judge Vance demanded, his voice echoing off the stainless steel appliances. "She is a ward of the state! You have no legal right to detain her!"
Damian didn't move an inch. He stepped in front of Renley, his towering broad frame completely blocking her from the flashlights, his hands resting calmly in his wool coat pockets.
"You're late, Judge Vance," Damian said, his deep voice carrying an effortless, terrifying authority that made the lead tactical officers hesitate.
"I hold a signed emergency custody order!" Vance snapped, stepping forward.
"And I hold a registered bloodline adoption deed signed by Don Vincent Moretti fourteen years ago," Damian countered smoothly, pulling the legal document from the tin box and tossing it onto the stainless steel counter between them. "Co-signed by the Chief Justice of the Appellate Court yesterday morning."
Judge Vance's face went sheet-white as he looked down at the official state seal stamped on the parchment.
"Furthermore," Damian added, his dark eyes glowing with lethal focus, "the steel flash drive my niece delivered to my estate three hours ago contains twelve years of offshore wire transfers linking your private judicial accounts directly to Marcus Vance's syndicate operations."
Outside the community kitchen, four black SUVs belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation pulled into the alley, their red and blue emergency lights flashing brightly against the wet brick walls!
Four federal agents burst through the shattered front doors, badges displayed clearly on their coats.
"Judge Thomas Vance!" the lead federal agent announced loudly. "You are under arrest for judicial corruption, conspiracy, and state fraud!"
Judge Vance backed away in pure, unadulterated horror as federal agents clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, dragging him out into the rain alongside his disarmed security team.
Silence returned to the community kitchen.

Damian turned around, looking down at Renley. He reached out, gently picking up the twelve-year-old girl in his broad arms, holding her close against his broad chest as Victor picked up her rusted bicycle from the back alley.
"Let's go home, Renley," Damian whispered softly into the night air.
