Chapter 8 - The Tin Box in the Pantry

By midnight, a convoy of two sleek black Moretti armored sedans pulled up to the quiet, dark alley behind the Community Kitchen of St. Jude in the lower ward.

Rain drizzled softly from the sky, reflecting the amber streetlights on the wet asphalt.

Damian stepped out of the lead vehicle, wrapped in a heavy black wool overcoat over his dress shirt, his posture commanding and unyielding. Victor walked beside him, flanked by two armed guards keeping a tight perimeter around the alley.

Renley stepped out behind them, holding Damian's hand securely. She led them through the rear service door into the quiet, dark kitchen that smelled of fresh bread and vegetable broth.

"Mr. Walter told me last week that if anything ever happened to him," Renley whispered, guiding them past the stainless steel prep tables toward the rear storage pantry, "I should look behind the flour sacks on the top shelf."

They entered the small pantry. Victor raised his tactical flashlight, illuminating the high wooden shelving lined with dry goods.

Renley climbed onto a small wooden stepping stool, reached behind two heavy fifty-pound canvas sacks of flour, and pulled out a small, dented tin biscuit box bound with heavy electrical tape.

She brought the box down, setting it on a prep table under the flashlight beam.

"Open it, Renley," Damian said gently, standing beside her.

Renley peeled away the black electrical tape and lifted the metal lid.

Inside the tin box lay a thick stack of legal documents, a small velvet pouch containing two worn gold wedding bands, and an official adoption certificate registered in the state court fourteen years ago—bearing Sarah Hart's signature alongside a legal seal from Don Vincent Moretti.

Damian picked up the adoption document, reading the legal clause stamped across the front page in red ink.

Under the terms of the legal agreement, Vincent Moretti had officially named Renley Hart as his legal granddaughter and secondary beneficiary to the entire Moretti family estate—granting her full bloodline protection under family law.

"He didn't just leave you a trust fund, Renley," Damian said, a profound, proud smile spreading across his sharp features. "He made you my legal niece. You are a Moretti."

Suddenly, the front glass doors of the community kitchen shattered into a thousand pieces as state tactical officers and Judge Vance's private security team burst into the building!
