Chapter 6 - The Ledger of the Forgotten

Thirty minutes later, the perimeter was secured. Police sirens wailed in the distance as local authorities—deep in the Moretti family's pocket—arrived to take Vance and his mercenaries into federal custody under grand-scale trespassing and armed burglary charges.

Down in the subterranean vault, the heavy iron deadbolts clicked open.

Victor pushed the door back, stepping aside as Damian walked into the room. Damian’s black dress shirt was dusted with plaster, his tattooed forearms bare as his sleeves were rolled higher, but his stance was tall, dark, and completely unshakeable.

Renley stood up from her wooden crate, looking up at him with wide, anxious eyes. "Is it safe?"

Damian offered a faint, genuine breath of a smile—a rare warmth that transformed his sharp features. "It's safe, Renley. The bad men are gone."

He walked over to her, reaching down to gently stroke her messy ponytail. "Come upstairs. We have something to read."

They returned to the quiet master study. The storm outside had passed, leaving a bright moon shining through the high windows, casting silver paths across the mahogany desk.

Damian sat in his heavy leather chair, motioning for Renley to sit in the armchair across from him. Victor stood near the doorway, keeping watch.

Damian pulled out the sealed letter from Walter Pike and broke the dark red wax stamp. He unfolded the thick parchment, smoothing it flat on the desk lamp's light.

He began to read his father's final words aloud, his gravelly voice echoing softly in the quiet room:

"My dearest son, Damian,

If you are reading this, my long watch has finally ended. Fifteen years ago, when the bomb destroyed my vehicle, I realized that as long as I held the title of Don, our family would never know peace. My enemies would hunt you to get to me. So I chose to become a ghost.

I lived in the lower ward, watching you grow into a leader far greater than I ever was. I saw you protect our people, build these walls, and carry the weight of our name alone. I am so deeply proud of you, my son."

Damian paused, his breath hitching as a single tear escaped his eye, tracing down his cheek. He took a ragged breath and continued reading:

"In the lining of the cloth bag, you found a steel flash drive. It contains the master access keys to the Moretti International Trust—a legitimate fund holding three hundred million dollars, built from clean investments away from the syndicate.

But I did not send this girl to you merely to deliver a drive. I sent her because of who she is."

May you like

Damian stopped reading. He looked up from the parchment, his dark eyes locking onto Renley with intense, breathless shock.

Renley blinked, her heart pounding. "Me? What do you mean?"
