Chapter 7 - Enemies at the Gate

Damian lowered the letter to the desk, his thumb tracing the final lines of his father's handwriting.

"Renley," Damian said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "What was your mother's name?"

Renley swallowed hard, her small fingers twisting the fabric of her yellow floral dress. "Her name was Sarah. Sarah Hart. She worked at the community kitchen before she got sick four years ago."

Damian picked up the letter again, reading the final paragraph aloud:

"Renley's mother, Sarah, was the young nurse who pulled me from the river fifteen years ago. She hid me, tended to my wounds, and kept my secret when the Vance family searched every hospital in the city. When Sarah fell ill four years ago, I swore an oath to her on her deathbed that I would protect her daughter."

Damian set the letter down, looking at the twelve-year-old girl sitting before him. "My father didn't just receive meals from you, Renley. He was living in that tiny third-floor attic on 5th Street so he could watch over you every single day after your mother passed away. He used the community kitchen roster to make sure you always had a safe delivery route."

Tears spilled over Renley's cheeks, dripping onto her dress as the quiet warmth of Walter's memory flooded her chest. All those afternoon visits, the teapot on the stove, the quiet old man who always asked about her day—he hadn't been a lonely stranger receiving charity. He had been a guardian angel keeping a silent promise to her late mother.

"He... he was watching over me?" Renley sobbed softly.

"He was protecting you," Damian said gently, stepping around his desk and crouching down beside her chair until he was at eye level with her. "And now, that duty falls to me."

Before Renley could answer, Victor's radio buzzed on his shoulder.

"Victor! We have a secondary situation at the outer gate!" a guard reported nervously. "A motorcade from the State Attorney's office just pulled up! They have a court order signed by Judge Vance demanding the immediate release of the minor, Renley Hart, into state custody!"

Victor's face went dark. "Judge Vance... Marcus Vance's brother. They're trying to use state authority to snatch the girl before we can register the trust!"

Damian stood up slowly, his broad frame casting a tall, dark shadow across the room as his eyes hardened into razor-sharp steel.

"Tell them to wait at the gate," Damian commanded coldly. "We're going to the community kitchen first."
