Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

Red emergency lights flashed silently across the high coffered ceiling of the study as security alarms hummed through the walls.

Victor drew his sidearm in a fluid, practiced motion, stepping between Damian's desk and the window. "They tracked her bike, boss! Vance’s men must have been sweeping the community kitchen logs looking for any movement connected to Vincent's old identity!"

Renley scrambled out of her chair, her face turning pale with sheer terror as the heavy thud of distant vehicle doors echoed from the outer courtyard. "I... I didn't mean to bring bad people here! I swear I didn't know anyone was following me!"

Damian didn't panic. He stood up from his desk, his towering broad frame radiating a cold, terrifying calm. He reached across the mahogany surface, gently taking Renley by her thin shoulder, pulling her safely behind his desk.

"I know you didn't, little one," Damian said softly, his voice firm and reassuring despite the chaos rising outside. "You kept my father fed for two years. Under this roof, no one touches a hair on your head."

Damian turned to Victor, his dark eyes burning with lethal authority. "Take Renley to the lower vault beneath the wine cellar. Lock the steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Boss, you can't face Vance's strike team alone!" Victor argued, his face tight with concern.

"I'm not alone. The house guards are in position," Damian growled, picking up the flat steel flash drive and the sealed letter, shoving them into his trousers pocket. "Vance thinks he's coming to collect a dead man's debt. It's time I show him who runs this city."

Victor grabbed Renley's arm gently, guiding her out through a hidden bookshelf door at the rear of the study. Renley looked back over her shoulder as the heavy wooden panel slid shut, seeing Damian stand tall in the center of the room, rolling his dark shirt sleeves higher over his tattooed forearms as he picked up a heavy silver sidearm from his desk drawer.

Victor led Renley down a narrow, winding stone staircase that spiraled deep into the bedrock beneath the mansion. The air grew cold and damp, smelling of aged oak barrels and wet stone.

At the bottom of the stairs, Victor pushed open a heavy iron door, ushering Renley into a small, climate-controlled vault lined with steel security boxes.

He closed the heavy iron door, engaged the triple deadbolts from the inside, and turned to Renley, his dark suit dusty from the tunnel.

"Stay near the back wall, kid," Victor said, pulling a tactical radio from his vest.

Renley sat on a wooden crate in the corner, holding her thin knees against her chest, her worn yellow dress looking wildly out of place in the cold steel vault. "Is Mr. Damian going to be okay?"

Victor glanced down at the brave twelve-year-old girl, his tough, suspicious demeanor softening slightly. "Damian Moretti has survived three syndicate wars, kid. But whatever was in that letter your old man left... it's about to change everything."
