Chapter 2 - the shadow in the foyer

The heavy oak door of the office opened, and Harrison Blake stepped inside. Clad in an expensive charcoal suit, a crisp white shirt, and a dark tie, the late-forty-year-old manager looked every bit the picture of composed, corporate perfection. His luxury wristwatch glinted under the chandelier light as he closed the door with a quiet click.

"You summoned me, Jonathan?" Harrison asked, his voice smooth and entirely unbothered.

Jonathan sat motionless behind his desk, his hands resting flat on the mahogany surface, covering the authorization folder. "How long has Rosa worked for this family, Harrison?"

Harrison paused, his eyes flicking briefly toward Rosa and Camila standing near the leather armchair. "Nearly four years. She’s been a dependable member of the domestic staff."

"Then explain to me why her account hasn't seen a single dollar since June," Jonathan said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register.

Harrison didn't flinch. He adjusted his tie with a practiced, easy motion. "There must be a processing error with the third-party payroll vendor, Jonathan. You know how these automated systems glitch during quarterly tax transitions. I will personally look into it first thing tomorrow morning."

"The money didn't glitch, Harrison," Jonathan said softly. He slid the physical ledger across the desk. "It was routed directly into a private account registered under the name Sterling Holdings. Authorized under your personal signature."

For a fraction of a second, the color drained from Harrison's face. His polished composure wavered, a micro-expression of pure panic flashing in his eyes before he forced a small, polite smile. "Jonathan, that is an internal holding account used for estate maintenance. It was established by your late father years ago."

Jonathan picked up his private phone, dialed his personal bank manager, and spoke clearly. "Transfer forty thousand dollars directly from my personal account to Rosa Martinez immediately. Clear all her pending bills."

Rosa gasped, covering her mouth as tears spilled down her cheeks. "Mr. Whitmore... thank you... thank you so much..."

Jonathan stood up to his full height, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the desk. He looked at Harrison with icy, unyielding eyes. "You're relieved of your duties pending a full audit, Harrison. Leave your keys on the desk."

Harrison’s smile vanished completely. "You're making a mistake, Jonathan. You don't know what your father set up in this house."

"Leave," Jonathan commanded flatly.

Harrison turned and walked out of the office without another word.

Once the door closed, Jonathan picked up the silver framed photograph on his desk, inspecting the frame. He noticed a small seam along the wooden backing. He popped the rear panel open, and a small brass key with a numbered tag fell out onto the blotter: Cellar Vault 04.
